A $12.7 million bond issue that would have funded construction of a new elementary school, plus remodeling of the middle school in Medical Lake, failed to reach the 60 percent super majority necessary for passage. The measure garnered 1,042 yes votes for 53 percent and 929 no votes, 47 percent.

The seven-year restriction that limited placement of manufactured homes in land zoned multi-family residential (R2) was overturned under a new bill passed by the Washington Senate.

The Cheney Blackhawks track team qualified 21 athletes for the state 3A track championships in Tacoma, including Katie Kimball in the hurdles and Jordan Oswald in the pole vault.

The Eyraud Co., a 25-year-old cake pan manufacturing business recently relocated from California, officially opened for business at 1321 Second St. behind Cheney Building Supply.

The latest renovation of the Pence Union Building was unveiled to the public and showed off brand new food service facilities, among other improvements at the student center built in 1971.

Seven members of the Cheney High School track team, among them freshman Jeanette Zimmer who shattered district records in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs, earned berths in the state championships in Tacoma.

Group Health announced it was going to locate a health care facility in Cheney, a community with more than 1,000 members.

EWU’s Associated Student Council had begun work on a Pence Union Building remodeling with Dunn and Hamre Construction the low bidder in the $212,888 project.

Former EWU women’s basketball player Lisa Comstock signed a contract to play for a semi-pro team in Wuppertal, West Germany where she would earn 1,500 marks — about $500 — per month.

May 29, 1975

Tony Singleton, 32, a Spokane native but most recently the fire marshal in Bedford, Texas, arrived in Cheney to begin serving as the city’s new fire chief.

At the state convention in Spokane, the Cheney Jaycees were selected as the outstanding chapter in the state of Washington out of 142 similar clubs, reported outgoing president Grant Peterson.

The Cheney City Council, following lengthy discussion, approved design of a new logo that would serve as the official emblem of the city. The design by Doug Graef of the Parks Department would soon begin appearing on vehicles and letterhead.

Eastern Washington State College’s Jerry Martin was named the NAIA District I Track Coach of the Year for a second year in a row after the team’s successful defense of its Evergreen Conference title.

May 28, 1965

Cheney High School was to recognize nine honor students among the 120 graduates in a June 4 commencement ceremony at the EWSC Field House. They include: Linda Simpson, Berta Wahl, Pat Edamatsu, Linda Gray, Carla Fackrell, Richard Hagelin, Mike Snapp, Eric Leighninger and Edna Cheever.

The annual poppy sale conducted by the American Legion Auxiliary netted over $135 according to chairperson Mrs. Ernest Harr.

Medical Lake’s 8-6 win over Cheney in the final Northeast A League baseball game of the season earned the regular season title for the Cardinals.
