Golden Feather Spirit Game is Wednesday, Jan. 14

Cheney travels to Medical Lake for fifth annual competition

The Cheney basketball teams will travel to Medical Lake to engage in the annual Spirit Game Wednesday, Jan. 14. The theme this year is "Back To The Feather," a play on the movie, "Back to the Future," which celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2015.

The date is much earlier than in the past and on a weeknight.

"We were forced to play the game on a Wednesday this year due to league scheduling conflicts," Medical Lake High School assistant principal and athletics director, Chris Spring said. "We hope that this does not impact the interest level from our students and community."

Spring encouraged the public to attend the event not just for the basketball - the girls play at 5:45 p.m. and boys at 7:30 - but to see how creative students get in trying to win the Golden Feather trophy.

"Those that attend this event get a great opportunity to see the talents from two great high schools," Spring said. "I think the level of entertainment we provide is the best bang for your buck on the West Plains."

Medical Lake has taken four previous spirit competitions since it became a Cheney-Medical Lake event in 2011. The Golden Feather originated in 2009 as competition between Medical Lake and West Valley.

"The Spirit Game has become by far the biggest event of the school year, Spring said. "We are excited to be at home this year. Our community has also embraced this event and looks forward to it yearly."

Doors open at 5 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students and seniors. Under school age is free. Spirit Packs, which include T-shirts and other items, are on sale at both schools.
