Net metering, in which electric customers produce some of their own energy by means of special generation equipment, was being offered to some customers of Cheney City Light.

The Cheney wastewater treatment plant, currently operating at 85-percent of its capacity, was anticipated to have been able to serve the community for another few years. By 2008 it was anticipated that the facility might need an $8 million upgrade.

The football head coaching contract of Mike Henry was not renewed after just one season - and a 2-8 finish - by the Medical Lake School District. No specifics were given in the decision to not renew the former Davis High School of Yakima defensive coordinator, hired to replace John Giannandrea who retired after 24 years.

A new ice skating rink made its debut at Sutton Park in Cheney as a recent cold snap allowed the city's Parks and Recreation Department to flood the area.

With all repairs and remodeling finished, Cheney High School principal Jerry Knott was planning the official dedication of the improved school buildings.

The Eastern Washington University women's basketball team scored wins of 83-71 over host Brigham Young University and followed that with a 79-62 victory over Howard University to win the BYU Holiday Classic in Provo, Utah. EWU's Rese Watterson, and local favorite, Medical Lake's Lori Napier, each scored 16 points for the Eagles.

Jan. 10, 1985

Peter Kerwien, director of the Spokane International Airport Business Park, was urging the communities of the West Plains to establish closer ties with one another during his keynote speech at the 41st Annual Cheney Chamber of Commerce Installation Banquet.

Cheney homeowners were being surveyed by Cheney Realty to determine their interest in the possibility of launching a second phase of 2400 University Place.

The Cheney boy's basketball team, fourth in the state in the 2A tournament in 1984, got off to a good start in Frontier League play following upset wins, over East Valley 78-33, and against Clarkston, 58-43. Bill Raunig scored 21 points against Clarkston and 14 versus EV.

Jan. 9, 1975

The 99002 zip code that formerly belonged to the Amber, Wash. post office went out of existence following the retirement, Dec. 31, 1974, of postmaster Martha Calvert.

Cheney was designated as an official Bicentennial City by the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission according to Cheney's parks and recreation director, Douglas Graef.

After a break for the Christmas holiday, Eastern Washington State College wrestlers were preparing to return to competition with road matches in Bellingham, against Western Washington University, Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, according to head coach Curt Byrnes.

Jan. 8, 1965

The annual January Mothers' March for the March of Dimes was set to take place Jan. 19 with 50 participants canvassing the community to collect money to help fight birth defects.

Cheney School District students were going to lose a pair or curriculum days and vacation time after earlier snow cancelled school.

After weather caused cancellation of a Northeast A League basketball game between Cheney and Deer Park, the Blackhawks were scheduled to play Chewelah. The Blackhawks lost to Colville 44-39 with Gary Rietz scoring 10 points.
