Relief was on the way for Cheney’s dwindling supply of single-family housing as the city was reviewing a preliminary plat for 136 lots in what would be known as Golden Hills Fourth Addition.

Former Sixth District state representative Todd Mielke announced he would challenge for the District 3 County Commissioner seat being vacated by the retiring John Roskelly.

The Seattle Seahawks were in the midst of their summer training camp at Eastern Washington University.

The Medical Lake School Board voted to install video cameras on school buses in order to better monitor behavior of students.

Members of the Cheney Fire Department were engaged in the battle to fight the 100,000-acre Entiat wildfire near Lake Chelan. They were part of a three-unit Spokane County strike team assigned to the fire.

Four Cheney players, Pete Montague, Ben Woodard, Eric Hegney and Landon Johnston were part of a Spokane All-Stars baseball team competing in the state Bambino Tournament in Moses Lake.

Aug. 2, 1984

Getting around Cheney promised to be a little difficult with 24 different street paving projects set to get underway in the city.

Mike Bunting, a recent graduate of Cheney High School and a standout football player with the Blackhawks, was selected to play in the East-West All-Star game in Everett. Bunting was going to join Tom Oswald who was named to the coaching staff in the game.

Aug. 8, 1974

Volunteers and crews from Spokane County Fire District 3 were keeping an eye on a 300-acre fire approximately six miles from Cheney near Spotted Road and Western Poultry. About 250 firefighters worked on the blaze whose cause had yet to be determined.

Students at Eastern Washington State College hoped to be able to have beer in the Pence Union Building following the reversal of an earlier decision by the Washington State Liquor Control Board to ban alcohol on college campuses.

Jim Nielson, a former player at Washington State University, was named new head boys’ basketball coach at Medical Lake High School.

July 31, 1964

The wheat harvest was set to get underway soon with an anticipated “bumper crop” of 45 bushels per acre expected from area fields.

An Aug. 14 deadline was quickly approaching to register for the Sept. 15 Cheney School District special election.

Cheney advanced to the finals of the Spokane County Parks and Recreation Department baseball championships with a 4-2 win over Linwood No. 4. Phil Conrath scored the tying and winning run for Cheney.
