Cheney's Scott Tobin named Special Olympics Athlete of the Year

Cheney's Scott Tobin has been the recipient of numerous honors over the years, but the latest might be the most special.

Tobin has been named the Special Olympics Washington 2014 Athlete of the Year, receiving the award May 9 at the 20th annual Breakfast of Champions at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle. Tobin was one of four regional nominees from around the state, and was chosen through a partnership between Special Olympics and Coca-Cola.

According to a news release, 1,000 Coca-Cola employees from facilities across the state received specific information on each of the four nominees and were asked to vote for one as Athlete of the Year. The majority selected Tobin, who according to a January 2012 Cheney Free Press story has been involved in Special Olympics since 2000, beginning at Cheney Middle School.

Tobin is a multi-medal winner in sports competition and was selected to travel to Washington D.C. in 2012 as Special Olympics Washington's state representative, meeting and telling his story on Capitol Hill. He's also a businessman, owning Fun Snacks where he sells snacks at community events in Cheney, including movies and concerts in Sutton Park and Shining Stars Inclusive Theatre performances.

Tobin, the son of Tony and JoLee Tobin, is also taking part in this year's Special Olympics fundraiser "Over the Edge." He will be one of several people rappelling from the roof of the 20-story Bank of America Financial Center in downtown Spokane Friday, June 27.

Financial support for Tobin's rappel can be made online at otespokane2014.kintera.org/faf/home.
