Suspect arrested for forgery and theft

Video surveillance footage helped Cheney Police Department investigators track down a pair of individuals who forged checks using a city of Cheney routing number.

Department Cmdr. Rick Campbell said they received a report May 7 from City Hall that individuals had attempted to cash two checks totaling $750 at the Wal-Mart in Airway Heights. One passed while the other did not.

Campbell said store personnel were contacted and video footage of the register where the checks were presented reviewed, identifying both suspects. The department then contacted the Airway Heights Police Department May 15 and asked them to go to the residence of one suspects to make an arrest.

Police arrested Zephery G. Strandey, 47, for forgery and third-degree theft. Campbell said the other suspect is known but still at large.
