The Copper Landing apartment complex being built on land west of Hayford Road and south of Northern Quest Resort and Casino is opening this month and tenants are already in the process of moving in.
The complex is on nearly 300 acres of land owned by the Kalispel Tribe. Construction began earlier this year.
Copper Landing LLC will lease the land from the tribe. The apartment complex on tribal-owned land is the first ever lease made on the Kalispel’s land holdings.
Inland Group PS, out of Spokane Valley, developed the complex. It is comprised of 216 units, each with 1-3 bedrooms, and rent will range from $630-$815. Units would be reserved for residents who earn less than 60 percent of the area median income.
Scott Morris of the Inland Group said the complex is 45 percent leased. He said Inland Group was interested in property in Airway Heights and reached out to the tribe who were interested in developing their property.
“It was a smooth process,” Morris said. “We were excited to partner with the Kalispel Tribe.”
Derrick Braaten, Airway Heights development services director, said the city will supply sewer and water to the apartments. He said that the complex would provide residents with affordable multifamily housing.
“Overall it’s going to be a boom to the city and its residents,” Braaten said.
Brandon Haugen, development manager with the Kalispel Tribal Economic Authority, said the tribe is equally impressed with how “smooth” the development process has been going. He said the complex provides “an example of a quality project to enhance the West Plains.”
“This is going to help propel development in the West Plains,” Haugen said. “Hopefully this leads to more development in the area for years to come.”
According to Morris, the project should be completely finished in the fall.
