Having survived the previous year’s difficult budget and hurdles over budget issues, the future projections appeared bright for Eastern Washington University. Bill Ponder, the university’s vice-president of student affairs, predicted enrollment would increase by more than 200 students from 8,980 to 9,200.
Cheney residents were given a chance to comment on the proposal by developer Rob Brewster to build a new 130-unit residence hall downtown.
An estimated 1,200 young wrestlers descended on Cheney and Eastern Washington University for the annual Jason Crawford Memorial tournament.
Mike Burns, formerly an assistant at both Eastern Washington University, and most recently Washington State University, was hired to replace Ray Giacoletti as EWU’s mens’ basketball head coach.

More public hearings were scheduled as the Cheney Planning Commission continued their 60-day moratorium on the continuing saga of establishing Greek housing at EWU.
Key Tronic Corporation notified employees that the shutdown of the Cheney plant would begin May 27 and conclude no later than June 10. An estimated 110 people were to lose their jobs in the closure.
Cheney improved its record to 6-0-1 and a perfect 5-0 in Frontier League soccer play following a 3-1 win over Pullman with Mike Kislinger, Cody Stitt and John Shamp scoring goals.

Mayor Tom Trulove and the city of Cheney were recently vindicated by a Court of Appeals concerning the 1981 decision by the mayor not to promote police officer Kenneth Side to a vacant sergeant’s position.
Led by its 1,600 relay team consisting of Michelle Wiley, Amy Cory, Joanna Vigil and Kathryn Smith, the Cheney girls took second place — with 91 points — in the Strandberg Relays behind Mead.

A Cheney School District activities bus was struck by a car at Sixth and Elm Street with the resulting impact turning the bus on its side. There were no pupils on board and the driver was not injured, but a Spokane driver was cited and fined $17 for running a stop sign.
A rosary was held in Medical Lake for pioneer and one of the community’s first residents, Pete Lefevre, who passed away March 24 at age 95, just days short of his 96th birthday, which would have been April 8.
With Dave Nicol tossing a one-hitter and Monte Pearson hitting a home run, Cheney defeated the North Central B-Squad 14-1 in a nonleague baseball game.
