Leasing less expensive than buying
The Cheney Police Department’s three new 2013 Ford Interceptors should enable law enforcement officers to better deal with severe weather conditions in responding to all calls for service, coming equipped with all wheel drive.
The Cheney Police Department now has three new patrol vehicles capable of going just about anywhere.
The department took possession through a lease agreement with Systems for Public Safety, located in Lakewood, Wash., of three 2013 Ford Police Interceptor SUVs. According to a news release the Interceptors are all wheel drives with a 3.7 liter, 304 horsepower engine with improved crash-worthiness, pursuit-rated components throughout along with a wider wheelbase, bullet-resistant doors and modern law enforcement electronics.
The SUVs replace three patrol cars in Cheney’s aging fleet. Instead of purchasing new vehicles, the City Council and Mayor Tom Trulove last September approved a request by Police Chief John Hensley to explore the leasing option as a cost control option. The cost per year to lease the three fully outfitted patrol units with unlimited miles is $33,358.
After a test drive Hensley said the SUVs “handled extremely well,” with the installed electronics exceeding expectations.
“This is an important first step in improving our ability to get to any call for service, even under severe weather conditions,” he said.
