Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies and the K-9 unit tracked down and apprehended a man who fled from a traffic stop on I-90 near Four Lakes Tuesday morning.
At approximately 10:45 a.m. Dep. Jeff Thurman stopped a vehicle driven by 42-year-old Isidro Mendez-Ortega, who presented the deputy with an Oregon state identification card and what appeared to be a fraudulent Social Security card. During the questioning Thurman noticed a rifle on the front passenger side floorboard and when asked about it Mendez-Ortega said he was hunting.
Thurman placed the rifle in the patrol vehicle while trying to verify Mendez-Ortega’s identity, which he could not, at which time Mendez-Ortega fled his vehicle in the direction of Silver Lake. Multiple units from nearby agencies responded and set up a perimeter, and Mendez-Ortega was eventually located hiding behind a building on Silver Lake Road and taken into custody.
U.S. Border Patrol agents have deported Mendez-Ortega from the U.S. once before. He was booked into Spokane County Jail for one count of alien possessing a firearm, one county of second degree burglary and one count of resisting arrest and obstructing.
