July 31, 1997

Cheney is up to its elbows in compost and it's getting buried deeper as the city tries to find a way to sell it. The wastewater treatment plant was designed to turn sewage into sanitary compost, which the city anticipated it would sell to interested parties. Unfortunately initial sales haven't attracted much interest.

“Save our school!”This was the battle cry of the many members of Local 931, the classified staff union at Eastern Washington University. The union rallied on campus in protest against and calling for the resignations of the university president and board of trustees. Protesters spoke on issues such as overstaffing of the school's administration, reductions in classified staff employment and continuing salaries to resigned faculty.

The Medical Lake Parks and Recreation Department is worried that two upcoming community sport events might not happen due to tougher state regulations. Officials say they feel they have to tighten the reins on road races following the recent deaths of a 13-year-old boy participating in a bicycle road race.

July 30, 1987

Eastern Washington University basketball coach Joe Folda and assistant coach John Wade will face possible disciplinary action from the university and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for improper recruiting activity. The violations, totaling just under $1,000, include one-way airfare between Los Angles and Spokane, Spokane Transit bus fares, one quarter of tuition at Community Colleges of Spokane and dinners at both restaurants and Folda's home.

Unusually cool weather has area resort owners in a glum state of confusion. Fishing has been slow for the most part with as much as a few cameo appearances from local campers. Optimism is still in the air despite the continuing rainy, windy weather and with the month of July nearly gone, owners are hoping for a better August.

Medical Lake City Council members voted to place its annexation decisions on the voters during their recent meeting. Now that the city has decided to place annexation on the ballot, it's out of their hands and into the voters' and county Boundary Review Board. The city also has to pay all costs for annexation elections.

July 28, 1977

Cheney area horse owners are being urged by the Cooperative Extension Service to vaccinate their animals against the dreaded horse sleeping sickness “equine encephalitis” as the temperatures climb. A disease transmitted by insects, it becomes a serious problem with increased mosquito populations. Vaccinations are available and last up to one year.

Eastern Washington State College board of trustees is expected to announce its choice for the school's new Provost for Academic Affairs. Applications for the position, a new office created by President H. George Fredrickson's administrative reorganization effort, were recently narrowed from 142 to 10 by search committee.

Members of the American Federation of Teachers Local 1823 should be prepared to face “a long drawn out process” now that they've filed a lawsuit to gain collective bargaining rights at Eastern Washington State College for faculty members. The lawsuit filed by AFT was the result of nearly two years of groundwork by the Local, which represents the majority of educators at the college.
