Clare McGraw, Cheney Free Press|Updated Oct 30, 2023

For the past 15 years, Steve Grime (pronounced Grim) has been turning his humble home on 2217 Marrigold Circle, Cheney into a spine-chilling spectacle that leaves the neighborhood in awe. From basic decorations to elaborate, eerie displays, his journey into Halloween decor has been nothing short of extraordinary. Grime's Halloween decorating journey began years ago when he decided to take his love for the holiday to the next level. Starting with basic decorations, he...

Keep council consistent I first met Vince Barthels in a public hearing more than 20 years ago and since have become well acquainted with him. We were both environmental scientists and consulting wetland experts. I have a great deal of respect for Vince based on his professionalism, integrity, knowledge base and critical thinking ability. Vince is and has been employed by a leading civil engineering company for nearly 25 years in the Spokane area. Cheney deserves Vince’s continued leadership on the city council because he h...

  • Cheney City Council Seat 6 Pete Montague

    Cheney Free Press|Updated Oct 20, 2023

Each candidate was asked to answer three questions for publication. These are the responses from Pete Montague. 1) Some residents have concerns about the re-zoning and potential development of the land around the trailer court along 1st St. Do you support this? Please explain why or why not. Yes, I do support this. Property owners should have the right to do as they see fit with the property they own if the proper legal channels are followed. It matters not if I agree or disagree with the business that goes in, it is the...

What is your stance on Critical Race Theory 1. I don’t believe that Critical Race Theory has a place in our schools today. I think that CRT can be divisive and create more of a problem than what it claims to solve. Instead of telling our children that when anything bad happens to blame it on systemic racism, we need to focus on teaching our kids that through hard work and dedication that almost anything is possible. Taking responsibility for your actions and future is the most important thing that a child can learn. H...

    1) Please explain your stance on including Critical Race Theory? CRT is a lens in which to view patterns of systemic racism that honors the experiences of black, indigenous, and people of color and the obstacles they face due to the color of their skin. As a teacher, I was not aware of CRT until I began PhD-level coursework and have never seen it at the K-12 level. The focus should be on Culturally Responsive Teaching instead, which connects students’ cultures, languages, and life experiences with what they learn in s...

What is your stance on Critical Race Theory This is not a conversation we are having, thus I do not have any comment on this question. 2) Many residents have been wanting to see new schools built, especially in Airway Heights. Elementary schools are moving forward, but there is no solid talk about a middle or high school yet. Do you see a need for secondary schools in Airway? What needs to happen? The Staff and School Board in Cheney Public Schools are very aware of the need for more Schools in our district due to the...

    1) Some residents have concerns about the re-zoning and potential development of the land around the trailer court along 1st St. Do you support this? Please explain why or why not. I supported the rezoning from commercial to mixed use/residential prior to the discovery of a massive diesel leak in Minnie Creek. We have a massive housing crisis in our region and less restrictive zoning is a step in the right direction. However, I was and still am a vocal opponent to the redevelopment of the North Cheney Trailer Park. I won’t s...

Please explain your stance on including Critical Race Theory? Critical Race Theory is just that, a theory. There is no explicit instruction of CRT in the curriculum for schools in Washington state. Where it is discussed, it should be alongside all perspectives to ensure a well-rounded student learning experience. It is imperative, however, that these perspectives, while at times uncomfortable for some to hear, be shared and debated openly, and not kept away because it makes us feel poorly. 2) Many residents have been wanting...

    1) Some residents have concerns about the re-zoning and potential development of the land around the trailer court along 1st St. Do you support this? Please explain why or why not. While it is good to have Cheney utilizing more Mixed Use zoning as it is part of an overall strong, healthy town, this specific potential development of the land under and around the mobile home park would displace approximately 70 households with no current plan on how to help these residents. This park is the most affordable housing option in...

    1) Some residents have concerns about the re-zoning and potential development of the land around the trailer court along 1st St. Do you support this? Please explain why or why not. I did support the re-zone of the approximately 17 acres near Bi-Mart from commercial to a combination of mixed use and multi-family. Prior to the re-zone, the trailer park (a residential use) was a non-conforming use that existed in a commercial zone. The landowner has committed to working with current residents to provide relocation assistance...

  • Turnbull planning controlled burns

    Cheney Free Press|Updated Oct 19, 2023

CHENEY – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will conduct controlled burns at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge during the fall and winter months. These burns started Friday, Oct. 13. Turnbull officials said burning will start this month and continue through February, weather permitting. The purpose of the fires is to reduce “fuel,” such as downed timber and dry grass and sagebrush, to help alleviate the potential for future wildfires. This will reduce the risk of wildfires on the refuge, and will also contribute to habit...

6 a.m. October 1st, 2023. The early morning autumn light gently filtered through my eyelids, waking me slowly, easing my foggy brain into another day’s existence. A languorous stretch produced the effect I hoped for- a furry headbutt to my shoulder as Tika rolled into my side. This was the magic hour; sleep slowly leaving my head, dawn lifting the veil of dreams and a rather insistent pup vying for my half-awake attention. I love this moment between worlds when nothing is required of me yet, just pet the dog and try to d...

    Updated Oct 12, 2023

As I wait for the white fluff from the skies, visions of next year’s gardens dance in my head. I definitely plan to incorporate more pollinator friendly plants. I so enjoyed the antics of butterflies and hummingbirds and plan to accommodate them with even more delicacies. The hummers couldn’t seem to leave the honeysuckle vine climbing on my rock wall alone. And now though the tiny little birds have flown to warmer places, like many of my two legged friends, the shiny, bright red berries and late coral-red, yellow blooms have...

There’s a party going on in my back yard, and a good one too, from the looks of it. Seems like everyone is getting quite rowdy with the confetti of fall strewn everywhere. The Aspen tree is still a bit tipsy with its gorgeous, yellow leaves dancing precariously in the wind, leaves who are trying to stay, but must reluctantly let go and drift to the ground. Beyond are two Dogwoods and an Ornamental Pear, outfitted in shades of red, yellow and green, clinging to their dresses as they sober up for what’s to come, avoiding the...

On Sunday, my husband and I went to Moses Lake to a fancy restaurant to celebrate our fifty-seventh wedding anniversary. We don’t eat at fancy restaurants very often, but this was a special occasion. I hate to say it, but after so many years, good food is appreciated, but not necessarily found exceptional. The special part is the fact I don’t need to cook and I enjoy having a special evening with my husband. But what surprised me, yet perhaps shouldn’t have; I looked at a number of the younger diners and they were on their...

  • Gardening by Osmosis: Tips on Pruning

    Updated Sep 28, 2023

I’ve been asked, “When is a good time to prune my shrubs?” My response is, “Why prune? Are they bedraggled, overgrown, diseased, have dead or dying branches? If you are a DIYG, “Do it Yourself Gardener” and have a good sharp pair of pruners, a small folding saw, a solution of 10% bleach and water you have the necessary tools. It is time consuming to cleanse after each cut but at least sterilize your tools after pruning each species to minimize the transfer of pathogens or insects. Pruning after a shrub flowers is a good guid...
