  • There's a real problem with Christmas

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated Dec 17, 2018

Folks, there’s a problem with Christmas, and I’m not sure what we can do about it. Is this problem defining what Christmas is all about? Maybe. Yes, there is a religious aspect to Christmas. Christians celebrate the holiday as the birth of Jesus Christ, even though there’s little evidence outside of historical tradition that the event took place this time of year. Pagans have celebrated this time of year as a time of rebirth in that the lowest part of winter is past and the days are growing longer again. The darkness is be...

    SHANNEN TALBOT, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 13, 2018

The Airway Heights Fire Department may have been escorting Santa Clause around the city over the weekend, but that didn’t stop them from focusing on their primary duties and taking a break from spreading Christmas cheer to address a structure fire that required the response of multiple local agencies. A single-wide mobile home in Vietzke Village on Craig Road caught fire early Sunday evening, resulting in flames that reached high into the sky, igniting a nearby tree and s...

  • Eag-citement

    PAUL DELANEY|Updated Dec 13, 2018

These young Eastern Washington football fans were quite happy after Nsimba Webster scored to give the Eagles a 28-21 lead in last Saturday's Football Championship Subdivision playoff game against UC Davis with just over seven minutes to play. They were likely much happier when Sam McPherson's touchdown run with 26 seconds to play rallied the team to a 34-29 win and a berth on the FCS semifinals Saturday, 11 a.m. at Roos Field against the University of Maine...

  • Turnbull to cut 325 acres of timber land

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated Dec 13, 2018

Cheney is used to the rumble of semi-trucks hauling grain, and for the next several months, logging trucks will be thrown into the mix. That’s because Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge is undertaking a forest management project through removal of various stands of Ponderosa Pine on three portions of the refuge located southeast of Cheney. The refuge has issued a permit to Bailey Logging of Loon Lake, Wash., to thin these stands, which, according to a Nov. 20 news release, w...

  • Local tree lot helps pave road to recovery

    SHANNEN TALBOT, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 13, 2018

At the height of his addiction, a homeless Earl Curry locked himself in a public restroom and tried to cut his own throat. "I was sawing at my neck with a knife and somebody saw me and called the cops, who took me to Providence Hospital. They ended up letting me go, but at that point the only end to the story that I saw was suicide by cop," Curry said. The man in Curry's story is a far cry from the one that exists today, who can be seen this month sharing his experiences and...

  • Looking Back

    Updated Dec 13, 2018

1 Years Ago Dec. 11, 2008 When a few Medical Lake City Council members suggested the creation of a 24/7 fire service despite a lack of funds to provide for even one full-time fire employee, questions were raised addressing whether or not the volunteer fire and emergency medical services department could continue to work at its existing capacity and still meet the needs of the community. The department missed about 10 percent of its calls in November 2008, partly due to plummeting volunteer numbers. The Ice Age Floods...

  • Building walls is ecomonics

    Updated Dec 13, 2018

Nancy Street recently suggested that building walls is hypocritical. Do you have locks on your doors Nancy? Do you invite anyone and everyone into your living room? Let’s rethink where hypocrisy lies. As for Jesus, he had no cause to ask for a wall to be built: Jerusalem already had TWO! Sadly, when you and I went through Cheney High School, economics was not required. It should have been. Perhaps you might better understand the tradeoffs. Paula Thornton Spokane...

  • Socialized health care questions start with funding

    FRANK WATSON, Contributor|Updated Dec 13, 2018

During the recent mid-term elections, Democrats campaigned extensively and at times quite successfully on health care. The specifics covered a wide spectrum. The recurring theme, however, appeared to be cost. Politicians across the board promised cheaper care. Realistically, care can only be cheaper if we reduce the quality or quantity. Twenty-five years ago, my uncle died of prostate cancer. There was nothing that the medicine of the time could do to save him. Now, however, patients have several treatment options, all of...

  • Good economic news sprinkled with caution

    DON C. BRUNELL, Contributor|Updated Dec 13, 2018

The good news is Washington’s revenues continue to grow and projections for the next couple of years appear promising. That is welcome news, but it is sprinkled with caution about introducing new taxes. Our state’s Economic and Revenue Forecast Council (ERFC) quarterly update shows a whopping 17.3 percent increase in state income for the current biennium. That welcome announcement comes just in time for Christmas. For background, Washington’s budget is on a two-year cycle...
