  • Eastern looks to disappoint T-Birds this time

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 17, 2013

Last year Southern Utah made Senior Day most memorable. Colton Cook kicked a 36-yard field goal with just 3 seconds remaining - the last of three he connected on that afternoon - to cap the Thunderbirds’ 30-27 win over the then No. 1-ranked Eastern Washington Eagles at Eccles Coliseum in Cedar City. The Eagles would like to return the gesture and make the Thunderbirds trip home to Utah just as long as the one Eastern endured in 2012. SUU and Eastern will have a 5:05 kickoff a...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 17, 2013

Medical Lake got a landmark cross country victory last Tuesday that sets the Cardinals up to claim a potential first-ever league cross country championship. The ML girls, meanwhile, saw Eagle runners claim four of the top seven finishes losing 20-39. “We ran really well, actually,” head coach Gene Blankenship said. “The kids just went out and ran hard....

    Updated Oct 17, 2013

Cheney lost to Colville in four sets last Tuesday. Although Cheney finally found its footing in the third set, winning one of the four, it wasn’t enough momentum to propel them further. In the game, senior Ashley Seiler had 23 kills, senior Kinsey Pease had 33 assists. Junior Kimber Case had 11 digs and senior Morgan Davis had four aces in the game. Cheney takes on West Valley today (Thursday, Oct. 15) and Clarkston next Tuesday, Oct. 22....

  • Knights blank Blackhawks 30-0 in forgettable game

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 17, 2013

For the Cheney football team, last Friday’s game at East Valley is one worthy of having amnesia over. The Knights used touchdown passes from quarterback Connor Ramm to wide receivers J.T. Phelan and Gage Burland and a stifling defense that shutdown the Blackhawks running game to post a 22-0 halftime lead en route to a 30-0 win in Great Northern League play. Ramm also hit Phelan on a TD pass in the fourth quarter for the final points. “It was one of those nights where things just went wrong,” Blackhawks head coach Jason Willi...

  • Eagles get 3-0 shutout win in home opener

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 17, 2013

Eastern Washington University men’s hockey coach Bill Shaw liked the looks of thing a lot more this week following a 3-0 shutout win over the University of Victoria last Friday at the University Recreation Center. The Eagles got single goals from Tanner Hawes, Matt Hanson and Paxton Bell – one in each period – all at even strength to even their record at 1-1. Bell also added an assist in the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League home opener for EWU. “I was really...

  • Eastern falls in Big Sky soccer

    Updated Oct 17, 2013

Senior Katy Allen gave the Eastern Washington women’s soccer team an early lead but three unanswered goals from North Dakota saw UND defeat the Eagles, 3-1, last Sunday, Oct. 13, in a Big Sky contest in Fargo. Eastern (1-5 Big Sky, 3-12 overall) emerged from their eastern swing 0-2 after a 2-1 loss Friday at Northern Colorado in Greeley. A 67th-minute goal by junior Katie Cashman wasn’t enough to hold off a pair of late goals by Northern Colorado. Eastern travels to Missoula for a contest Friday, Oct. 18 with the Gri...

  • Lady Hawks hope home field advantage pays off

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 17, 2013

Cheney girls soccer head coach Nils Radtke is dubbing the next two weeks of games “Operation Home Field Advantage.” With three of their final four Great Northern League games on the friendly confines of the pitch at the high school, the Lady Hawks hope to use the lack of a bus ride to their advantage and move up in the standings for a post-season playoff berth – one that might even net them a first round home game. The Lady Hawks suffered two setbacks last week, losing a needed-league game on the road at Colville Tuesday and...

  • 'D' comes to play in Cards' win

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 17, 2013

The defense that Medical Lake head football coach Wes Hobbs knew was hiding out there somewhere came to play last Friday. And they put on quite a show as the Cardinals totally dominated the Chewelah Cougars 32-0 in a Northeast A League game that helped Medical Lake improve hope of once again making the postseason. Giving up just 41 total yards – including a scant 2 yards on the ground – the Cardinals (2-2 Northeast A, 3-3 overall) ended a two-game losing streak and firmed up...

  • Eastern gets big defensive plays in win over UND

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 17, 2013

In their Big Sky Conference opening game versus Weber State, the Eastern Washington defense conducted business with a lot of quiet surgical precision. That ended with the Eagles limiting the Wilcats to 249 total yards in a 41-19 victory. Last Saturday inside the Alerus Center in Grand Forks, N.D. the now No. 4 ranked Eagles defense decided to challenge the offense for big play headlines in a 35-14 win. Eastern’s defense turned two second-half UND turnovers into scores, i...

  • Hall of Fame gives Medical Lake a leg up

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 17, 2013

There are a lot of things the community of Medical Lake might not have. A big box store, a movie theater, more than one place to get gas come to mind. But one thing the 4,700 or so residents have is an event each year that now has become a tradition where former Cardinal athletes have their days in the spotlight through induction into the MLHS Athletic Hall of Fame. The sixth class of the hall will be honored this weekend with festivities that include recognition at...
