    DON C. BRUNELL, Contributor|Updated Sep 26, 2019

Traditionally, media coverage of the Paris Air Show focuses on the battle between Boeing and Airbus over market share for newer large commercial jets. However, this year Mitsubishi shared the spotlight with its state-of-the-art "SpaceJet." SpaceJet is not the latest aircraft to join British billionaire Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic suborbital space fleet. It is a new regional passenger aircraft designed to compete head-to-head with Brazil's Embraer E-175 for routes...

"We are available to help people shut down their irrigation systems in a way that protects fish," agency Fish Screening Manager Danny Didricksen said. • Tough loss in Jacksonville doesn't spell doom for Eastern Eagles

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated Sep 20, 2019

I don’t know what was more frustrating, Eastern Washington University’s fourth-quarter collapse last Saturday at Jacksonville State or the subsequent reactions to it on social media. Granted, we’ve grown accustomed to the Eagles football team taking over in the final 15 minutes of play, whether it’s rallying to win or putting the foot on the gas and sealing the another victory. So blowing a 17-point lead and getting shutout down the stretch is a bit unsettling. But to read some of the posts on various Eagle fan pages,...

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated Sep 20, 2019

Cheney High School’s cross country teams have a lot of positives to point to coming out of their first meet — last Saturday’s multi-team Highlander Invitational at Shadle Park in Spokane. “Great effort by the whole team,” head coach Derek Slaughter said in an email. “We can really tell that the team put in over 6,000 miles of running this summer.” The Blackhawks senior boys finished fourth out of 26 schools with 99 points and trailed only Greater Spokane League teams Mt. • Lady Blackhawks kick off season right

    SHANNEN TALBOT, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 20, 2019

The Cheney High School girls soccer team kicked of the season on the right foot, snapping up two wins in less than a week. First, the Lady Blackhawks took on University High School in a non-league match on Tuesday, Sept. 10 in a fierce battle that pushed into overtime. Neither team managed to score in the first half in a back and forth game that ultimately saw the Titans and the Blackhawks both take 10 shots at the goal. University’s goalkeeper made eight saves, while Cheney’s relatively new, underclassman goalkeepers spl...

  • Cardinal football squad falls to oversized Okanogan

    Lee Hughes, Staff reporter|Updated Sep 19, 2019

The Okanogan Bulldogs (1-1) brought their big boys to Holliday Field in Medical Lake to dominate on the ground under the Friday night lights on Sept. 13, in a 33-6 loss for the smaller Cardinal football squad. “They’re big, but they’re not that good,” was how one Cardinal player assessed the Okanogan players in the middle of the first quarter. Maybe, but the Caribou Trail League Bulldogs were good enough to continue jacking-up the score as the contest wore on against the agg...

  • Cheney shuts out visiting Rogers 35-0

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated Sep 19, 2019

Cheney High School scored on their first two drives of Friday’s home opener with Rogers and never looked back in a 35-0 drubbing of the visiting Pirates. Dalton Harriett scored the first of his three rushing touchdowns on a 16-yard run for a 7-0 lead at the 8:17 mark in the first quarter. The Blackhawks made it 14-0 less than two minutes later on an 11-yard Alex Long to Ryan Rieckmann TD pass. After failing to make a first down on its first three possessions, Rogers finally f...

  • Administration is slowly removing human rights

    Updated Sep 19, 2019

Chip, chip, chip away. Do you notice the chipping away of human rights of migrants and reduction of total number of refugees by the present administration? Day after day, it creates an even more cruel way to block asylum-seekers; the latest being the denial of refuge for Bahamians fleeing the ravages of Hurricane Dorian, and people living here sometimes for years, who require advanced medical care. This of course includes children being sent back to their countries of origin where there is limited access to medical care, a...

  • Cigarette butts make cleaning Cheney difficult

    Updated Sep 19, 2019

“Cigarette butts, the most littered items in the world, are proving to be an intractable trash problem for regulators and tobacco companies. Throwing them on the ground is a firmly entrenched habit for many smokers.” This statement published in the Wall Street Journal was sent to me recently. It goes on to say “Regulators are taking a tougher stance on cigarette filter pollution amid concerns about the environmental impact of single use plastic. For decades, butts have been made from cellulose acetate, a form of plast...
