  • Baldwin says the 'red' still remains a place to reckon with

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Aug 25, 2016

The joke, as Eastern Washington University head football coach Beau Baldwin likes to tell it, goes like this: “It’s interesting, the pessimists in Missoula and Bozeman in 2010 tried to convince me, ‘Coach, by 2016 you’re going to have a pink field,” when Eastern was in the process of installing that wild red rug at what is now Roos Field. As he addressed the annual gathering of the West Plains Chamber of Commerce at its Aug. 17 breakfast on the red turf Baldwin delivered...

  • Schmidt heeds calling as a man in 'blue'

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Aug 25, 2016

Tyler Schmidt will probably be the first to admit that his baseball skills were never meant to set the world on fire. The proof, perhaps, coming in that the 2008 Cheney High School graduate played just one year of ball for the Blackhawks. But the 26-year-old Schmidt still wanted to stay connected to sports and has seemingly found that opportunity as the guy so many of us love to hate. He's a baseball umpire. And not only has Schmidt taken more than a passing fancy with...

"Right now we have letters of intent for 25,000 square feet." Byrd was not at liberty to name potential companies...

  • Brown Bear upgrades will speed car wash experience

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Aug 25, 2016

The automated car wash was originally designed to save the time of the person who wants to have their vehicle look nice, but has better things to do than drag out the hose, the suds bucket and sponge - and then spend 30 minutes or more removing the dirt and grime. In Cheney, the Brown Bear Car Wash is currently undergoing a massive makeover that will help it deliver on that mission. "We bought those sites, one in Cheney and three in the greater Spokane area in 1997," Lance Ode...

Cathy has not unendorsed or unsupported this person, thereby embracing the future he promotes in degrading individuals, and showing her lack of character and courage in facing up to it. Cathy’s endorsement means she openly approves of this person’s positions that dishonor and disrespect Sen. John McCain as no war hero because he was captured and...

  • U.S. Olympic success leads to Internal Revenue Service gold

    DON C. BRUNELL, Contributor|Updated Aug 25, 2016

Guess who was among the first to welcome our Olympic athletes back home from Rio? None other than the IRS. For U.S. athletes, winning an Olympic medal comes with pride, glory — and a hefty federal tax bill. According to TIME magazine, Michael Phelps owes over $55,000 in federal income taxes for his five gold and one silver medals earned at the recently concluded summer games. That’s a whopping amount even for someone whose net worth is $55 million. The U.S. is one of a few...
