Nice weather is here and more people are out enjoying our parks, lakes and outdoor activities. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Department would like to remind everyone that criminals are also out looking to prey on valuables left unattended in vehicles. Don’t be a victim of these prowling thieves, plan ahead; don’t leave valuables in your vehicle. The Sheriff’s Office continues to receive reports from citizens who have returned to the vehicles only to find all their valuables, wallets, credit cards, phones/tablets, money,...

Jakeb Vallance turned in an outstanding effort on the mound, with a total of 12 strikeouts between the...

Kepler ran just .009 seconds under the class 8.90 minimum "index" for the Super Comp class, "breaking out" and thus losing. Cooper, however, was quicker off the starting line. "Due to my reaction...

  • Gubrud predicted to repeat; Eastern football picked No. 2 behind UND

STAFF AND NEWS SERVICE REPORTS|Updated Jul 21, 2017

There will likely be no surprise attacks in 2017 from the Eastern Washington University offense. Last season, Eagles' sophomore quarterback Gage Gubrud shocked just about everyone - except, perhaps, himself - by becoming the Big Sky Conference's Offensive MVP. The McMinville, Ore. product was tabbed July 17 to repeat that honor in preseason voting from the league's annual Football Kickoff in Park City, Utah. Gubrud was joined on the preseason all-conference list by senior...

  • Up and down with the Seattle Mariners

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jul 21, 2017

I hesitate to write anything on this year’s Seattle Mariner’s. Especially right now. The M’s have had a propensity lately to put together a few winning streaks of promise, only to have those erased like Vesuvius wiping out Pompeii. A good example of this was Monday night’s series opener with the American League West Division leaders Houston Astros. The M’s have had a difficult time this season against the AL team with the best record, especially at Minute Maid Park. Monday’s game was a roller coaster and typical of the seas...

  • Cannons return to state tourney

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 21, 2017

As he usually is, Cory Wagner was his productive self in the Spokane Cannon's American Legion AAA district seeding game against Gonzaga Prep. But Prep's Nick Drynan was equal to the effort the Medical Lake High grad provided on Thacker Field at Joel Ferris High School in a 2-1 Gonzaga victory. The win sends Prep to the upcoming state tournament as the No. 2 seed from Spokane. The Cannons, which feature a large contingent of West Plains' athletes from both Cheney and Medical...

Patricia L. Morgan, known to most as Patty, passed away peacefully on the morning of Monday July 17, 2017 at her home in Medical Lake, surrounded by family. She was born on June 3, 1940 in Brainerd, Minn. to Weldon and Florence (Biehl) Morgan, and shortly thereafter moved with her family to Pasco. After graduating high school, she began work as a nurses aid when she met Richard W. Schulz, and the two were wed on Sept. 24, 1960 in Las Vegas, Nev. and were married for 27 years,...

  • Looking Back

    Updated Jul 21, 2017

1 Years Ago July 19, 2007 Hot weather and very dry conditions led Spokane County officials to declare a 60-day burning ban. Two of the four West Plains Little League’s All-Star teams emerged as champions and earned trips to state from district competition. 20 Years Ago July 24, 1997 Brent King, a disabled Army veteran from Cheney, competed in the 17th National Veteran’s Wheelchair Games in San Diego. He earned gold medals in both the 800 and 1,500 races, and took silver in the 200 meters. In the highly competitive world of...

  • Airway Heights offers free outdoor summer movies

    Grace Pohl, Staff Intern|Updated Jul 21, 2017

There is no lack of outdoor movies this summer in Airway Heights, thanks to the “Motion Auto Supply Moonlight Movie Series” at Martella Field in Sunset Park. Even though it is halfway through the series, there are still four more movies happening before it draws to an end. The past movies shown at the park were “The Iron Giant,” “Hook,” and most recently, “Kicking and Screaming.” Next up on the list will be “Lego Batman” on July 28. Then “Sing” on Aug. 11, followed by “Grease” for the Airway Heights Days Special Featur...
