  • Mixed bag for Medical Lake Legion team

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jun 29, 2017

It was a mixed bag that followed Medical Lake’s AA American Legion Baseball team through their 1-5 week of play last week. Bats were either smacking the ball, or not. Gloves were either snagging the ball, or not. And pitchers were either on, or not. The week started out with a literal bang and a 23-12 win over Central Valley, followed by a 6-3 loss in game two June 20. “It was crazy, it was a 3 1/2 hour game,” co-head coach Austin Sharp said of the opening slugfest. “We h...

  • Cheney High School acknowledged for athletics and scholarship

    Updated Jun 29, 2017

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Here in the dog days of sports — meaning all we have for team excitement is baseball — might be a good time to look back on the high school sports year just completed. But before I go on, not that there’s anything wrong with baseball. I love it! It’s just it’s made that much sweeter when it’s coupled with football. And football is sweet when coupled with basketball and hockey, etc. Back to high school, at least metaphorically. On June 12, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jun 29, 2017

After 34 years in the classroom, on fields, courts and fairways, Medical Lake's Jim Mason is calling it a career. "It's time to do some other things, I want to go hunting and fishing," Mason, a Walla Walla native, said in announcing his retirement recently. He could not have gotten a better retirement present, albeit by luck or happenstance, either. "I got a great retirement gift, I drew a bighorn sheep tag, almost impossible to draw," Mason said. It came at the perfect time,...

We’ve always tried to be accessible. The church was built 50 years ago without steps — and the only place we have steps we also have a ramp. Last year, with help from the Cheney Building Department, we redesigned the bathrooms to near ADA standards. So we have a wheelchai...
