  • Marchand finishes 19th at state

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Jun 11, 2015

Cheney High School’s Tyler Koohns and Cheyenne Marchand ended their season at the 2A Golf State championships, May 27-28. Marchand finished 19th out of 40, shooting a combined 177 over both rounds. This is an improvement from last year’s state tournament where she finished 22nd and shot a 195. Head coach Gerald Morton praised Marchand’s performance, saying she made great contact with the ball, however her putting game fell short. “She summed it up perfectly when she said ‘It’s like I completely forgot how to putt,’” Mor...

Medical Lake’s Hannah Hartman reached the state 1A golf tournament at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco with a combined score of bi-district and districts of 192. The Cardinal senior shot a 94, which was a PR for her, but she missed the cut, which was 91. “It was a great year for the whole team,” head coach Gary Hartman said. “Next year we have seven girls coming back and leading that group is Abby Zappone who made it to districts....

  • Cheney 15U Summerhawks preps for summer season

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Jun 11, 2015

The Cheney Summerhawks 15U baseball team is preparing for a change of scenery. Unlike Cheney’s 17U team, which plays an independent schedule this summer, the 15U squad will compete in the Spokane Indians Youth Baseball League. The Summerhawks’ will play all of their games outside of the West Plains. “We were talking with the league to see if we can use Westwood Middle School as a home field for us,” 15U head coach Nick Fell said. “But we’re the newbies of the league, so we understood if we had to play all of our games outside...

  • Medical Lake softball struggled with youth in 2015

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jun 11, 2015

Youth may have been the Achilles heel of the Medical Lake softball team in 2015 but that will likely translate into success next season. "We've got two seniors graduating this year, we're still pretty young," head coach Tim Blakely said following the Cardinals up and down season that saw them finish 6-12 overall and 5-9 in the Northeast A League. Following a 5-2 start the Cardinals lost 10 of their last 11 games, including a 13-1 thumping by Colville in a first-round,...

  • UFC-USADA partnership brings a big shift to MMA

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Jun 11, 2015

The UFC has taken a big step in addressing the recent string of high-profile failed drug tests from fighters that happened in the last year. At a June 3 press conference, they announced a partnership with the USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency). The agency will act as an independent administrator and conduct out-of-competition drug testing on the promotion’s contracted fighters. The UFC has no input on the program. In February, the UFC announced that it would enact the World Anti-Doping Agency’s standards in hopes of cur...

The Bandits went 2-3 for fifth place in the eight-team U16 Division. West Plains opened with a 1-0 loss Friday to NI Xtreme 98 in a pitchers duel between North Idaho’s Kayla Patton and the Bandits Taylor John. The Cheney Summerhawks 17U baseball team traveled to Riverside High School where they went 1-1 in a doubleheader against a Priest River club team, June 7. After the Summerhawks lost the first game 14-10, they came back to win the nightcap, 12-7. “This Priest River team was a combination of kids from three different schools, Riverside, Newport and Priest River,” head coach Austin Sharp said. “They were a little more competitive than we thought.” In game one, Cheney got their bats going early in the first inning with Dylan A...

  • Depth, experience is a plus for Spokane Blue Devils

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jun 11, 2015

Second-year Spokane Blue Devils' head coach Steve Hare likes things much better this season. Hired relatively late in the cycle in 2014, Hare inherited a team and a situation over which he had little control. But he made the best of it, reaching a goal of making it to the postseason. Hare replaced Tony Byrne who had to resign due to demands of his day job, but when that happened, much was already in place with the Spokane AAA American Legion team that draws from Northwest...
