  • Medical Lake sends nine to state 1A track

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated May 29, 2014

The trip to state is short, but nevertheless rewarding for the Medical Lake Cardinals. Following a third place finish in 1A Bi-District competition that took place last Friday in Cashmere, the Cards will send nine athletes to the state 1A track championships this Friday and Saturday at Roos Field. “We had a really good day, that’s all there is to it,” co-head coach Gene Blankenship said. Medical Lake earned 74 points to finish behind champion Lakeside (89 points) and River...

  • ML tennis falls just short of state trip

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated May 29, 2014

Close was as near as the Medical Lake girls tennis team got to the state tournament following regional play last weekend at West Valley High School in Spokane. “We needed to win just two matches to qualify for the state tournament, but couldn’t make it happen,” co-head coach Dawn Eliassen said. The Cardinals were represented in the combined A-B regional by Cassidy Hagel and Annette Carlson at No. 1 doubles play and won their opening match over Reardan 6-2, 6-2. “This was a g...

  • Blackhawks finish season with 7-0 loss to Ellensburg

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated May 29, 2014

The Cheney High baseball team’s season ended this last weekend in the 2A regional playoffs, in Yakima, after they lost to the Ellensburg Bulldogs, 7-0. Blackhawk batters faced trouble in the form of Ellensburg pitcher Junior Ledgard, who struck out 12 Cheney batters. Cheney’s defense managed to keep it a scoreless game until the bottom of the fourth where Kyle Hickman hit a single to bring in the first run for the Bulldogs. In that same inning with the bases loaded, Alonso Bibiano hit a three-run triple. “Ellensburg is a goo...

  • Lady Hawks rally falls short in playoff loss at East Valley

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 29, 2014

The Cheney High School softball team’s late game rally fell just short of overcoming an 8-0 East Valley lead as the Lady Hawks ended their season with an 8-7 third-round road playoff loss to the Knights last Tuesday. Cheney got on the board in the fourth inning, capitalizing on an East Valley error that allowed Adrianna Suiter to score from third on Shay Turner’s grounder. Cheney added two more in the frame on Cheyenne Hanson’s triple to left field — that appeared to be just a single before it took a huge hop over the Kni...

  • Johnson's record may not reflect his talent or his future

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated May 29, 2014

The UFC recently signed a fighter named Dashon “Fly Boy” Johnson, a 26-year-old prospect from California with a 9-0 record — eight of those victories being submissions or knockouts — who will face Jake “The Celtic Kid” Matthews, 4-0, in June. On paper this looks like this newcomer will make a good addition to the UFC’s lightweight (155 pounds) division, but examining the records of his last nine opponents may give a different impression. Johnson’s nine bouts have been against opponents who have a combined record of 13-29...

  • Cheney sends five to 2A track and field state meet

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 29, 2014

Five Cheney High School track and field athletes - four girls and one boy - advanced to this weekend's 2A/3A/4A state meet by earning top-two finishes at District 7 competition last Thursday and Friday at West Valley High School. Two Blackhawks earned district titles. Junior Steven Zachman became the only Cheney boy to move on by winning the 800-meter run with a season-best time of 1 minute, 57.12 seconds – over 9 seconds faster than his preliminary mark. • Othello stuns Blackhawks in state tournament

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 29, 2014

It wasn't supposed to end this way. In five of the last six years, season's end for the Cheney boys' soccer team has come after a four hour, 38 minute, 277-mile drive to the west and each time on the final day of state 2A Final Four soccer action in Sumner. Four times the Blackhawks came up short, but last year, they finally won the big prize. This year, defense of their state title ended on Cheney's home turf in round one of tournament action with a 1-0 loss to the Central...

  • Cardinals battle back for state softball berth

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated May 29, 2014

Faced with the choice of packing up the gear for the year after last Saturday's 3-2 Bi-District 1A softball loss to Cashmere, or figuring out a way to beat Riverside and pack for a trip this weekend to the Tri-Cities, the Medical Lake Cardinals chose the latter. They shored up the defense that cost them in the opener, took advantage of some shoddy fielding by their opponents and scored a 5-2 win in the loser-out game. That sent the Cardinals into a Friday contest with Seattle...

  • From the archives: 1984

    Updated May 29, 2014

As the Cheney city swimming pool prepared to open in 1984, workers such as Parks and Recreation Department maintenance supervisor Wayne Foland (left) was busy installing new gutter grating at the edge of the pool deck. The grating had cost $12,000 and replaced old deteriorating ceramic tiles. The pool was celebrating its 20th anniversary in 1984 and had a variety of events and activities scheduled, including swimming lessons and numerous public swimming ses...

  • Looking Back

    Updated May 29, 2014

1 Years Ago June 3, 2004 A study was beginning on the future of Cheney’s water system in an effort to calculate what kind of loss was occurring through leakage and evaporation. Medical Lake’s boys’ tennis team won its first 2A state tennis championship edging a pair of schools, Omak and Cashmere, 16-13. The title was secured with runner-up finishes from Zak Nelson and the doubles duo of Matt and Tim Stevenson. 20 Years Ago June 2, 1994 Medical Lake School District officials were awaiting word on whether they would recei...
