Cheney sends five to 2A track and field state meet

Five Cheney High School track and field athletes - four girls and one boy - advanced to this weekend's 2A/3A/4A state meet by earning top-two finishes at District 7 competition last Thursday and Friday at West Valley High School.

Two Blackhawks earned district titles. Junior Steven Zachman became the only Cheney boy to move on by winning the 800-meter run with a season-best time of 1 minute, 57.12 seconds – over 9 seconds faster than his preliminary mark.

Junior Jamie Bradley also earned her way to competition at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma by winning the pole vault with a vault of 9 feet even. Accompanying her in the field events will be senior Kinsey Pease, who placed second in the javelin with a throw of 121-00, and freshman KD Skillingstad, placing second in the triple jump with a season-best 35-09.

Senior Johanna Sherman will also make the trip to compete in the 300 hurdles, finishing second to Deer Park's Anna Cartee with a time of 48.33. Sherman's fastest time in the 300 hurdles this season is 47.60.

Overall the Cheney girls finished third out of seven teams at districts while the young boy's squad placed seventh. East Valley captured the girls crown while West Valley took the boys.

Providing scoring for the boys was Carson Kerr (seventh, 200), Kyle Lerch (sixth, 3,200), Sam Schreiber (fourth, 300 hurdles), Houston MoCzulski (eighth, pole vault), Gaige Felix (fifth, triple jump) and Brett Wyborney (fifth, shot put). The boys 4x100 relay team was sixth and the 4x400 team placed fourth.

Scoring for the girls was Kendyl Cone (sixth, 100; third, 200), Katie McGourin (fourth, 200; fifth shot put), Savannah Hyde (third, 400), Abbie Hammermeister (third, 800), Mattie McNair (sixth, 1,600; fifth, 3,200), Alexis Schmidt (fifth, 3,200), Sherman (third, 100 hurdles), Pease (seventh, high jump), Kayla Lemelin (eighth, high jump and triple jump), Brooklyn Spencer (seventh, pole vault), Ally Jones, (fourth, long jump), Courtney Schwendiman (fifth, triple jump), Sasha Johnson (seventh, discus) and Rylie Pease (fifth, javelin). The 4x100 team placed fourth while the 4x200 and 4x400 teams each placed third.
