    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 10, 2016

The Cheney School District is looking to refinance $51 million in general obligation bonds it issued in 2010 in hopes of saving taxpayers money. The $51 million the district is refinancing is a part of an overall $78 million in construction bonds from 2010 that paid for the construction of two middle schools and one elementary school. According to Kassidy Probert, executive director of finance, the $51 million had a call feature in the 2010 bond resolution allowing the district to be able to call back the bond for redemption...

"The whole tournament was third-quarter blues for us," Brown said after losses to Kings Way Christian, 47-45 March 3 and Zillah 71-57 the following day. • Diligence sets those who accomplish goals apart

    MICHAEL R. CHARTER, Contributor|Updated Mar 10, 2016

For this month’s PACE (Partners Advancing Character Education) character trait, we will discuss the trait of diligence. Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines the term diligence as “persevering application.” Ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius noted “The expectations of life depend upon diligence; the mechanic that would perfect his work must first sharpen his tools.” American icon Mark Twain once said “Diligence is a good thing, but taking things easy is much more restful.” Founding Father Benjamin Franklin used diligence...

  • Nethercutt, Republicans should support nominee

    Updated Mar 10, 2016

Recently, former Congressman George Nethercutt said that if Donald Trump got the Republican nomination for president, he would leave his selection box blank. As a former conservative Republican turned Independent, this is exactly what’s wrong with today’s Republican Party. They never do what they say they are going to do, and that’s why you’re seeing the voter’s revolt and the turn to Trump. Voters are fed-up with the do nothing Congress on both sides, as proven by their lowest ratings ever! I voted for George on his stanc...

  • Language is what it is - a needed part of societal growth

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 10, 2016

I’m a word guy, and subsequently, a language guy. Arguably, language is the greatest invention man has ever produced. We wouldn’t be here without it, written or spoken. I’ve recently dusted off a set of language discs I hope will help me learn enough Spanish to get around and into trouble — and out of it — on my fifth mission trip to Guatemala this summer. Listening to the introduction, the narrator made the statement that most experts consider the spoken word language more so than the written. We learn most from the spoke...

  • Election year offers chance for personal reflection

    Updated Mar 10, 2016

It may only be early March, but by now, most of us should be starting to have concerns about who our choices for president will be when November’s election rolls around. Let’s take a moment to reflect on the campaign season so far — if “campaign” is the proper word to use. It’s difficult to refer to any of the Republican debates to this point as “debates,” at least according to Webster’s simple definition of the word, which is “a discussion between people in which they express different opinions about something.” Much of what...

  • Local officials continue to seek balance in records requests

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 10, 2016

Local city officials hoping for legislative relief from large public records requests are going to have to keep on hoping — at least for another year. House Bill 2576 would have made a number of adjustments to the state’s Open Public Records Act, but was assigned to that chamber’s Rule’s Committee’s “X” file on Feb. 26 and will receive no more consideration the rest of the current session. Washington Newspaper Publishers Association’s Olympia bureau coordinating editor Frank Garrard said the file removes bills clearing...

LAVENDRICK SMITH, WNPA Olympia News Bureau|Updated Mar 10, 2016

OLYMPIA—A controversial bill that would have allowed local agencies to prioritize how they fulfill public records requests is dead. House Bill 2576, which drew criticism from open-government proponents, but had strong support from local government entities, has been placed in the Washington State House Rules Committee “X” file, and will receive no further consideration this session, said the bill’s sponsor Rep. Joan McBride, D-Kirkland. McBride’s proposal, which was aimed at stopping overly broad and harassing requests...

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 10, 2016

Medical Lake’s City Council voted 6-1 at their March 1 meeting to purchase a used road grader to replace the city’s aging machine, but not before questions arose regarding how to pay for it. The city’s current road grader was 5 years old when it was purchased in 1967. City Administrator Doug Ross said talk about replacing it began about 10 years ago, but action kept being put off.
