OLYMPIA – Rural Spokane County emergency officials testified Thursday, Jan. 30, against House Bill 1258. The measure, if passed into law, would shift only Eastern Washington rural emergency services revenue to the large municipalities. Here, that means tax revenues would be siphoned from rural districts and pumped into city of Spokane service. In Cheney, Spokane County Fire District No. 3 Chief Cody Rohrbach is questioning why the bill only targets rural areas “located east of the crest of the Cascade mountains.” If passed in...

When the Legislature’s majority Democrats joined Republicans to pass the parental-rights initiative during our 2024 session, did they do so to keep the popular measure from being passed by voters in November, making it possible for them to gut the new law this year over Republican objections? Perhaps. But one thing is certain: Democrats in the state Senate have acted quickly to undermine Initiative 2081 law less than a year later. Senate Bill 5181 was hustled through the Senate Early Learning and K-12 Committee on Jan. 23. R...
During the 1992 presidential campaign, then-candidate Bill Clinton famously intoned, “I feel your pain,” reassuring voters he understood what they were going through. Since then, similar statements of empathy have become a staple for politicians; however, it does not always ring true with every constituent. Take small business owners, for example. Most elected officials have no idea what it is like to risk everything you have or to struggle to meet payroll for your emp...

She soon found that the club offered much more, including educational programs, social gatherings, and a shared passion for gardening. The gro...
Much of California’s Habitat for the migratory Monarch butterfly is gone. Wild fires have decimated groves of trees and plants where the Western Monarch winters. The typical flight plan of the Monarch is to breed in sunny California and fly north to lay their eggs on Milkweed plants where their caterpillars will feed. Monarchs have been very infrequent visitors to Spokane County until the last few years. Because of extreme weather, including climate change, loss of habitat, and unbridled use of pesticides, populations of M...
