  • Cheney golf is in the middle of the GNL pack

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated May 3, 2013

In their third GNL tournament, the boys’ and girls’ Cheney golf teams took third and fifth place, respectively, keeping pace with some of the league’s top teams. The boys’ team just missed out on second place, scoring 452 behind Pullman’s 451. Tyler Maurer had the team’s best score for the day, shooting an 83 that was good enough for 10th place overall. Peter Condon and Nick Hilzendeger were second and third with scores of 89 and 90, respectively. Bob Hilzendeger, in his first...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 3, 2013

Medical Lake’s girls’ tennis team improved to a perfect 6-0 in the Northeast A League following a 4-1 win over Riverside last Tuesday. The Cards completed their NEA schedule this past Tuesday at Lakeside. “After the previous week, last week seemed downright low key,” head coach Dawn Eliassen wrote in an email. Medical Lake had come off a week with three matches in five days. Rachael Hansen claimed the win at No. 2 singles 7-6 (8-6), 6-2. “It took Rachel a set to find her...

  • After a rough outing, Cheney boy's tennis soars back

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated May 3, 2013

Although the week started off rough for the Cheney High School tennis team, their comeback one day later was nothing short of impressive. Last Tuesday, the team struggled against perennial GNL top team Clarkston, losing 6-1. “They were going to be tough, and we knew that coming in. Pullman barely got them 4-3,” head coach Jesse Erickson said. “That was the first time they’ve lost in six years, so they’re pretty dominant.” Throughout the day, singles play wasn’t as consistent as previous outings, leading some to struggle again...

  • Cardinal soccer finishes strong with three straight victories

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 3, 2013

Medical Lake boys’ soccer coach Zane Higgins certainly liked the results his team produced last week as they rebounded from a last-minute 3-2 loss April 18 against regular season champion Lakeside. The team’s two wins, 5-1 over Newport last Tuesday and 9-0 Thursday at home against Riverside, concluded the Cardinals’ Northeast A League season and earned them a second place finish with a 6-3 record. By the time the Cardinals got a 2-1 overtime win this past Monday over Newpo...

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 3, 2013

The Cheney boys’ track and field squad earned a split in Great Northern League action last Thursday at Colville, losing 106-39 to West Valley but downing the host Indians 80-56. Jesse Hallstrom and Calvin Berstler led the Blackhawks with a pair of first place finishes on the track. Hallstrom turned in a season-best of 2 minutes, 1 second to capture the 800-meter dash while Berstler went 15:37 to win the 110 hurdles, finishing second in the 300 hurdles in 40.90. Tom Trude was second in the 400 (54.44) with Carson Kerr fourth w...

  • Déjá vu: Erin Clark sets school pole vault record - again

    JAMES EIK, Editor|Updated May 3, 2013

Erin Clark’s new school record in the pole vault lasted exactly one week. The Cheney senior broke her own mark of 11 feet, 6 inches set April 18 in a dual meet with East Valley and Deer Park by going six inches higher last Thursday, winning the event and helping give the Blackhawk girls two Great Northern League wins at Colville, over the host Indians, 89-58 and West Valley, 79-70. Clark hit 12 feet for the first time, easily outdistancing the competition by 3 1/2 feet. But wh...

  • East Valley knocks Cheney around in 11-2 diamond win

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 3, 2013

Four runs in both the first and second innings proved too much for the Cheney baseball team to overcome in an 11-2 Great Northern League home loss last Tuesday to East Valley. Starter Tanner Smith’s knuckleball was “not sharp,” manager Randy Elam said, allowing four runs in the first and facing just one hitter in the second. Alex Berman came on in relief and also fell victim to the Knights’ bats, giving up four runs as well in one inning of work. Austin Harding relieved Berman in the third and “did a nice job,” Elam said,...

  • Lady Hawks still hope to move up in playoff seeding

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 3, 2013

The Cheney softball team hit well and fielded well, but struggled on the mound in a home loss last Tuesday to East Valley. The Knights capitalized on walks and 15 hits to down the Lady Hawks 13-3, moving over Cheney into fourth place in the Great Northern League. After falling behind in the top of the first, Cheney wasted little time in knotting the score at 2 in the bottom of the frame. The Lady Hawks loaded the bases on three straight hits by Cheyenne Wright, Amy Anderson and Katie Bethel, scoring on Adriana Suiter’s b...

  • Blackhawks earn second consecutive GNL soccer title

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 3, 2013

Sometimes it doesn’t matter how you win, you just need to win. The Cheney boys’ soccer team notched a pair of victories in just such a fashion last week, and in the process earned their second consecutive Great Northern League regular season title. The Blackhawks got unassisted goals from Daniel Bogart, 26th minute, and Micah Weller, 47th minute for a hard-fought, 2-0 road win last Tuesday in Clarkston, and turned around less than 48 hours later to produced a 3-2 shootout win at Pullman Thursday. Cheney hasn’t lost a boys’ GN...
