Déjá vu: Erin Clark sets school pole vault record - again

Erin Clark’s new school record in the pole vault lasted exactly one week.

The Cheney senior broke her own mark of 11 feet, 6 inches set April 18 in a dual meet with East Valley and Deer Park by going six inches higher last Thursday, winning the event and helping give the Blackhawk girls two Great Northern League wins at Colville, over the host Indians, 89-58 and West Valley, 79-70.

Clark hit 12 feet for the first time, easily outdistancing the competition by 3 1/2 feet. But while going 11-06 last week gave her the second best mark in state 2A, topping 12 feet leaves her third, behind Burlington-Edison’s Tiffany Richeson and Squalicum’s Kristen Webber who went 12-04 and 12-06 respectively in meets last weekend.

The new record positions Clark well for upcoming postseason competition, as do other team results from Colville. Chae Brown was first in the 100-meter dash in 12.95 while Kendall Dunn turned in the fastest time in state so far this season to win the 200 in 25.60. Dunn also won the 300 hurdles in 45.67, third fastest in 2A.

“She cleans up two hurdles and she’s going to be running in the 44s pretty quick,” head coach Tom Stralser said.

Janessa Day captured the 400 in 58.44, also third fastest so far, while Sanne Holland won the 3,200 in 11:12.90. Mariah Brenton was second in both the 800 and 1,600, Johanna Sherman second in the 100 hurdles while Abby Hammermeister and Mattie McNair were third in the 400 and 3,200 respectively.

Despite Brown’s blocks slipping at the start of the 4x200 relay, and a bad handoff further down, the team composed also of Kelsey Fillmore, Dunn and Day took first with a 1:46.20, second fastest in the state.

Brown captured first in the high jump at 4-10, and led a group of four Blackhawks in the triple jump with a mark of 36-11, followed by Alyssa Rhoads and Savannah Hyde who both set new personal records at 32-10 1/2 and 31-05 and Zania Stewart at 31-04. Haley Ottosen was third in the discus, Kinsey Pease third in the javelin, with Kendall Case fourth, and Rhoades fourth in the long jump.

Saturday a scaled back girls team headed to the Riverside Invitational, finishing ninth overall out of 23 teams. Brown took second and third in the 100 and 200 while Sherman was fifth in the 100 hurdles and McNair ninth in the 3,200. The 4x200 team of Sherman, Fillmore, Hammermeister and Brown finished fourth while Brittany Meyer set a new PR of 8 feet for eighth in the pole vault.

Cheney traveled to Clarkston Wednesday, May 1, for the final GNL season meet, with District 7 competition slated for May 9-10 at West Valley.

“We’re starting to rest our kids we’re thinking are district, regional or state bound,” Stralser said.
