Mixed results for Cheney track

CHENEY — Cheney track and field athletes scored several individual wins in their Greater Spokane League meet April 18, but those were not enough to lift the Blackhawks to any team victories.

Competing at North Central and with Mead, Cheney boys lost to the hosts 77-68 and 89-56 to Mead. The Blackhawk girls were edged by North Central, 77-73 with Mead winning handily, 112-33.

On April 20 both teams finished fourth in the annual Mooberry Relays at Rogers High School in Spokane.

Calvin Hilton ran a 9-minute, 23.44 second season best to lead a 1-2-3 Cheney finish in the 3,200 meters for one Blackhawk win. Samuel Hilton (9:54.62 PR) was second and Lucas Curley 10:11.56 PR) third.

Eugene Hennequin’s 20-foot, 9-inch effort topped long jumpers.

Other notables on the day included several runners-up including Tucker VanWormer with a PR of 11.29 seconds in the 100 meters.

“Tucker had a great day in the sprints,” head coach Derek Slaughter wrote in an email.

Kordell Laher, Cameron Johnson, Andrew Houndonougbo and Mason Stinson combined for a 3:44.89 in the 4X400 while Laher, VanWormer, Cameron Johnson and Hennequin recorded a 44.87 in the 4X100.

Cheney’s girls mirrored the boys result with Hannah Ward’s 12:42.71 and a win in the 3,200.

Clara Browne used a 116-11 toss to win the discus. Natalie Richards’ 49.46 was second in the 300-meter hurdles. Richards was joined by Lakia Heward, Sarah Hanson and Emma Ayers to finish second in the 4X200 in a time of 1:50.88.

Joy Assonken had two runner-up efforts in the shot put (32-02) and Javelin (106-08).

Cheney posted four Mooberry firsts with Caitlin Shaffer’s 57.82 tops in the 200-meter wheelchair. She followed that with a season-best 29.34 to win the 100.

Assonken’s 119-3 won the javelin for Cheney with Browne runner-up in the discus (119-11) and Natalie Richards’ 16.54 PR also good for second in the 100-meter hurdles.

Also notable at the Mooberry’s was the new school record of 18:23.45 in the 4X1,600 meters from Ethan Martin, Samuel Hilton, Calvin Hilton and Holland Hurd.
