Cheney runners qualify for state

PASCO – Cheney’s boys are off to the WIAA 3A state cross country championships in Pasco on Nov. 4 where they resume their rivalry with Mt. Spokane, and the rest of the state.

The No. 10-ranked Blackhawks have qualified as a team for the first time since ??? following a second place finish to the Wildcats at the Oct. 28 District 8 championships at Wandermere Golf Course in north Spokane.

Mt. Spokane, with their top runner Kade Brownell clocking a 15 minute, 35.21 second time for a 7-second victory over Cheney’s Calvin Hilton (15:42.03) took a 41-67 decision, but both qualified as a team.

Cameron Frenk (16:34.47/11th), Holland Hurd (16:46.01/16th) and Sam Hilton (16:52.52/17th) rounded out the top-5 for Cheney.

Cheney boys bettered their third-place finish at district competition in 2022.

Cheney will send Hannah Ward and Karlee Pope to state as individuals following the Blackhawks’ fifth-place team effort. Mead (39 points), with Raegan Borg its top finisher at 18:29.96, won over district rival Mt. Spokane (79) with Cheney fifth (131).

Ward finished 14th at 20:10.95 while Pope’s 20:24.81 was 19th..
