Cheney boys drop matches

CHENEY The Blackhawks boys’ tennis team lost a pair of Greater Spokane League matches last week, both by 6-1 scores to Lewis and Clark on March 28 and Rogers on March 30 at Salnave School.

Sam Frenk took the lone win for the Blackhawks against the Tigers at No. 4 singles in an effort Coach Dan Estock singled out.

“Sam Frenk was especially impressive today,” Estock wrote in an email about his 4-6,7-5, 7-5 rally for the win. “After losing the first set, Sam just kept battling and adjusting.”

Jacob Estock took a similar route to victory against Rogers at No. 2 singles, losing his first set 4-6 but then rallying for 6-4, 6-1 wins.

“Jacob showed us he can not only compete but win at the No. 2 spot,” his coach and father said.

Despite the one-sided nature of the match, Estock noted: “We had plenty of good long games today and sets that swayed back and forth.”

Cheney played shorthanded against Rogers.

“When there are only 11 to begin with, missing three players makes a more noticeable impact,” Estock said. “The bright side is that we had guys step up and fill gaps.”

Cheney had spring break off and resumes GSL competition April 11 at University.
