CROSS COUNTRY

Headrick runs away with race, but Lakeside is top team

Reid Headrick ran away from the pack to claim the individual title, but the Lakeside Eagles dominated to win a key Northeast A League cross country meet Oct. 12 at Medical Lake.

While Headrick ran with ease finishing over a minute ahead of his nearest competition in a time of 16 minutes, 11.93 seconds, Lakeside bottled up six of the top-10 finishes to grab the team win 22-37. Runner-up Hayden Blank’s 17:12.63 led a string of four Eagle runners across the finish line.

“We ran into a buzz saw yesterday,” head coach Gene Blankenship wrote in an email. “The Lakeside boys and girls are rated number one in 1A for good reason.”

The Medical Lake girls had a similar outcome, losing 24-35 as Sadie Meyring (19:29.60) out dueled ML’s Kayla Ramsey (19:38.01) in second and third place

Jenna Castro (21:02.49) in third.

Nakai Ornelas, running a very competitive race, was in third place for most of the race but was outkicked at the finish and landed a finish time of 17:55.82 for the Cardinal boys.

“On the girls’ side, Kayla Ramsey challenged Lakesides’ No. 1 girl,” Blankenship said. “They ran stride for stride up until the three-mile mark and ended up 9 seconds apart.”

Jenna Castro ran a solid third from the start. Jasmine Cruz battled Lakesides #2 and #3 throughout the entire race, finishing approximately 20 seconds behind Lakeside’s third finisher.

The Cardinal girls ran without their No. 3, Kaylee Dennler, who is recovering from a leg injury, but they expect her to be ready for district competition Oct. 29

at Chewelah Golf Course.
