Looking to expand our coverage

Since the Davenport Times and Odessa Record merged to create the Lincoln County Record-Times, our two-person news staff has worked together to report on news, community and sports items in Davenport, Odessa, Reardan, Harrington and the surrounding areas in Lincoln County.

Leveraging that staff to turn in a small-town weekly paper that goes up against any small paper in Eastern Washington quality-wise has been hard, but rewarding work. Now, we’re looking to expand that even further with paid and volunteer opportunities.

We are still searching for someone to work part-time in our Davenport office. I’m still the only Davenport-based employee, and my news coverage takes me out of the office quite a bit.

As many locals have realized by now, that makes consistent office hours difficult to promise, as I could be called out of the office on breaking news or appointments any time.

A part-time employee to man the office Monday-Thursday for about 5-6 hours a day that can help sell ads, take subscriptions, answer phones and talk to any citizens that stop in would be welcomed.

It’s also time to expand our reporting staff. I try to cover as much news and sports in Reardan as possible, but I know there’s plenty of local government and school board news that is often untended to by the newspaper due to time constraints.

Our sister paper, the Cheney Free Press, is facing a similar dilemma in Medical Lake. Conveniently, those two municipalities are located 15-20 minutes apart.

A paid reporter that can help out with town council, school board and sports coverage in Reardan and Medical Lake would be welcomed, and you’d get your name in two papers to boot.

As publisher Roger Harnack mentioned a couple weeks ago, volunteer correspondents to share the community happenings are welcome. Like he said, no news, meetings, assignments or politics are necessary for these correspondents…just sharing with readers what’s happening in your community.

Correspondents are welcomed from any local municipality, but are especially encouraged in the small communities: Edwall, Mondovi, Mohler, Seven Bays, Marlin. Heck, is there a Bluestem correspondent lurking out there somewhere?

If any of these positions interest you, volunteer or paid, email Harnack at roger@cheneyfreepress.com. If you have questions, drop me a line next time you see me or email dteditor@centurytel.net.
