Rodeo draws competitors, crowds from near and far

CHENEY-The annual Cheney Rodeo went off without a hitch this past weekend, with record numbers of spectators filling the BI-MART Arena to see America's top riders and ropers compete.

According to event organizers, the rodeo was so well attended on Saturday that ticket sales were halted for the first time in many years. The pre-rodeo parade on Saturday boasted record participation as well.

Contestants hailing from across the continent came to Cheney to earn big and several did, including a few local riders such as Jesse James Kirby. He currently ranks second in the Columbia River Circuit Saddle Bronc standings.

"It's a good little tune-up for the NFR Open next week," Kirby said, referring to the upcoming circuit finals event in Colorado Springs.

Originally from Dodge City, Kansas, Kirby has called Cheney home for about five years. "This is just a good circuit rodeo up here in the Northwest," Kirby said. "I love it here, it's beautiful."

Kirby racked up 78 points riding C5's Six Stron Saturday night.

Several competitors from the local area took part in last weekend's events, including Dylan Riggins, who holds third place in circuit bareback standings.
