Summer Hawks on a heater

CHENEY – After splitting their first four games of summer ball, the Cheney Summer Hawks have chalked up five wins in their last six outings.

Cheney took a twin bill from the North Central wolf Pack, 11-1 on June 15 and 12-2 on June 16, dropped a 4-3 game to Gonzaga Prep on June 17, swept a doubleheader from the East Valley Knights, 14-4 and 12-1 on Saturday, June 18 and rolled past Lewis & Clark 11-2 on June 20.

The Summer Hawks pounded out 53 hits to their opponents 28 over the six-game stretch.

“We are stressing better fundamentals and are improving each game out,” Coach Rob Beamer said. “We’re striking out less, putting the ball in play, and making the other teams field it.”

Tyler Ashcroft wielded the big stick in the six-game series with six hits, including two triples and two doubles. Tate Heuschkel also had six hits. Marcus Belarde and Clayton Wood recorded five hits each. Jacob Ulrich added three.

Ashcroft also tossed a one-hitter in the 12-2 win over East Valley that was shortened to five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

“Tyler had a no-hitter going into the last inning,” Beamer said. “The East Valley batter had a solid hit that got out of the infield.”

The four wins improve Cheney to 6-3 and give the Summer Hawks sole possession of second place.

Cheney hosted Mt. Spokane on Tuesday. The game was played after the paper went to press. Look for the results and recap in the June 30 edition of the Cheney Free Press.
