Winter sports end with State competition

CHENEY – Winter sports officially wrapped with the swim and wrestling teams representing well at the state tournaments.

The Blackhawks sent three wrestlers to the Mat Classic in Tacoma this past weekend, Feb. 18 and 19. Junior Joe Showalter competed in the 132-pound weight class, Junior Dalton Taylor wrestled at 152, and senior Ezra Anderson competed 182 pounds.

"All three of these guys really peaked at the right time of year and their hard work during the season and out of season paid off for them," Head Coach Jason Connor, said in an email to the Cheney Free Press.

Taylor placed third place at the tournament, and every match he won, he finished with a pin.

"Dalton's only loss came from two-time champion Alex Rapelje of Edmonds Woodway," Connor said. "He was a beast on top finishing the tournament with five wins all by pin."

Showalter has been a standout for the Blackhawks all year and ended his state tournament with a bang as well, finishing fourth in his weight division.

"Joe had a great tournament and battled back from a second round loss to the same wrestler," Connor said. "He went 6-2 on the weekend with bonus point victories in five of his wins."

Anderson was the lone senior representing Cheney. He made the most of his last state tournament.

"Ezra was another hammer on top pinning three guys and helping the Blackhawks earn twelfth place with just three wrestlers, Conner said. "We are going to miss his leadership, hard work ethic, and style in the room next year."

Ben Schrieber on the Boys Swim and Dive placed 13th in the 100-yard Breath Stroke event finishing with a time of 1:01.58.

"He had a really good season. He came off of a COVID year with diminished training being in a new division," Coach Jennifer Hochwalt said. "He had a really good state meet and he performed well."
