Blackhawks, Cardinals girls struggle

Liberty wins Okanogan Tournament

CHENEY – The Blackhawks girls volleyball team dropped was swept in nine straight sets over the last week, losing games to Mount Spokane, Gonzaga Prep and Central Valley.

Cheney (2-8) fell to the Central Valley Bears (4-6), 3-0, on Oct. 5. Set scores were 25-22, 25-18, 25-7.

Individual statistics were not reported.

Then, on Oct. 7, the local girls were swept by the Gonzaga Prep Bullpups (7-4). Set scores were 25-13, 25-8, 25-15.

Cheney’s junior Kate Palelek, sophomore Lilli Etter and senior Bailey Benson each had three kills in the loss.

Palelek added 6 digs and Benson 4. Freshman Emma Sandberg and senior Sidny Pederson each had 9 digs.

The Mount Spokane Wildcats (9-1) finished off the sweep of the Blackhawks over the last week with a 3-0 win over Cheney on Oct. 11. Set scores were 25-11, 25-14, 25-14.

The Cheney girls were set to play the Ridgeline Falcons (4-3) at the new high school in Liberty Lake on Tuesday, Oct. 12.

The newspaper went to press before the game began.

On Thursday, the Blackhawks will host the 7-1 North Central Wolfpack before hosting the Mead Panthers (13-3-1) next Tuesday, Oct. 19.

Medical Lake

The Medical Lake Cardinals (3-4) won two sets, but didn’t fare much better this past week.

The Cardinals girls were swept by the Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) Eagles on Oct. 7 and then lost, 3-2, to the West Valley (Spokane) Eagles on Oct. 11.

At home against league rival Lakeside (14-1-1), the Cardinals lost in three sets, 25-19, 25-15, 25-15.

At home on Monday, the Cardinals girls had a much better time, but fell short.

The local girls won their opening two sets, 25-20, 25-23.

But the Eagles came alive in the third set and took over the rest of the night. Medical Lake lost the last three sets, 15-25, 18-25, 9-15.

Individual statistics were not reported for the Cardinals girls.

Liberty (Spangle)

While Cheney and Medical Lake girls were struggling, the Liberty (Spangle) Lancers girls brought home first place from the 30th annual Okanogan Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 9.

The Lancers first topped Omak, 2-0, then beat Mount Baker, 2-1, and Brewster, 2-0, to advance to the championship game against host Okanogan.

In that final matchup, the Lancers spiked the Bulldogs, 2-0, for first place.
