Medical Lake girls have perfect week

MEDICAL LAKE - There are a lot of reasons both good and bad that will make the 2021 Northeast A League basketball season memorable for the Medical Lake girls.

On the positive side of the ledger might be the finish they produced last week with four consecutive victories that all but closed out the regular season.

The week opened on June 7 with a 45-41 win over Lakeside as Charde Luat led all scorers with 12 points while Tyana Newman had 11 points including three made 3-pointers.

Luat led the Cards with 11 points and Ellie Acord finished with 10 in a 48-39 wining effort against Riverside.

Helped by a big 19-6 surge in the first quarter, and Ellie Haas and her 21 points, Medical Lake topped Colville 47-36 on June 10.

No doubt about it the best effort was saved for last as Medical Lake ended a long drought against Deer Park beating the Stags 46-36 on June 11. Emma Maxwell and Luat each scored 16 points.

"We finally got a win against Deer Park, we lost five in a row last year," head coach Kyle Lundberg wrote in an email. "We executed a really solid defensive game plan."

Medical Lake closed out NEA play on June 14 facing Colville on "Senior Night." They likely wound up as the No. 3 seed Lundberg noted, earning them another meeting with No. 2 Deer Park in the league tournament on June 18.

Boys' basketball

The Medical Lake boys won two games last week with Northeast A League wins over Riverside 60-53, Colville 69-66 and Deer Park 60-54. Scores and details games with Lakeside (June 7) and Deer Park (June 11) were not available.

Oscar Harris led all scorers with 23 points while Ashton Hamilton-Becker added 15 more as the Cardinals used a strong second half to power past the Rams.

Harris had another stellar effort at Colville with 40 points, but it was Eugene Haas' overtime 3-pointer that was the difference. Haas had 13 points in the game.

Medical Lake (6-4) will finish as the NEA's No. 3 seed with the league tournament starting play June 18.

Wrestling

ML wrestlers score big individual wins in the final week of Northeast A League competition.

"We lost 47-21 but the score doesn't tell the story," Cardinals' head coach Matt Leenhouts wrote in an email.

At 126 pounds Aden Carl pinned Tomio Yamada who placed third in state last year. Another big win was Chris Garza over Benson Osborne while Ben Henry and Gavin Chaffee won their matches.
