Cheney softball showing competitive streak

CHENEY — The Lady Blackhawks slow pitch softball team continued its success in its Greater Spokane League inaugural season, winning three of four games over the past week to stay in the middle of the pack. Cheney is currently seventh in the 12-team league, one-half game back of University with two games remaining.

Boys basketball

With the season wrapping up on June 10, the Blackhawks are still searching for the win column. Cheney dropped three games last week, 80-41 on June 1 to Ferris, 65-55 to Mead June 3 an 81-37 to Central Valley June 5.

Josh Whiteley led Cheney with 17 points against Ferris and 13 points at CV. Whiteley and Henry Browne each tossed in 20 points as the Blackhawks overcame a sluggish start to give the host Panthers a game June 3. Trailing 22-4 at the end of the first quarter, Cheney rallied, outscoring Mead 20-15 in the second and 17-9 in the third to pull within five at 46-41 with eight minutes remaining. Mead held off the Blackhawks in the fourth for the win.

Cheney falls to 0-8 overall, 0-5 in GSL play.

Girls basketball

The Lady Blackhawks notched their second win of the season, downing visiting Ferris 42-35 on June 1. Emma Evans scored 13 points while Tylin Hertel added 10 as Cheney outscored the Saxons 28-20 in the second half for the win.

Evans led Cheney with 15 points in their 49-24 loss at Mead on June 3. The senior scored 16 points, with Paige Evans adding 13 points in the Lady Blackhawks 64-49 loss at league-leading Central Valley June 5. Cheney led 18-15 at the end of the first quarter, but were outscored 37-19 by the Saxons in the second and third quarters to fall to 2-6 overall, 2-3 in league play and currently sit in sixth place.

Gymnastics

Cheney placed fifth in team competition June 3 against Central Valley, Lewis and Clark, Shadle Park and Mt. Spokane at the Mead Gymnastics Center. Mt. Spokane won the meet, followed by Shadle, LC and CV.

Slow pitch softball

The Lady Blackhawks went 3-1 in action this past week, crushing Shadle Park 18-2 June 1, edging visiting Rogers in 16-13 slugfest June 3 before losing 12-2 at University June 4, but rebounding for a 12-2 win over visiting North Central on June 7.

Ella King hit a three-run home run and drove in five runs in Cheney’s 15-hit attack at Shadle Park. Pyper Cagle added four hits, including a triple, and three RBIs, while Cierra Morton added another four hits.

King also led Cheney against Rogers, going 3 for 3 with a home run, a double and 3 RBIs. Pyper Cagle added three hits, with Parker Cagle, Adrian George and Charlie Rajewski each collecting two hits. Cheney was able to capitalize on five Pirates errors.

The Lady Blackhawks managed 10 hits — three by Pyper Cagle and two by King — but could only plate two runs against the Titans, who banged out 13 hits.

King homered twice against NC on June 7, driving in five runs with Parker Cagle going 3 for 3, including a double, and Pyper Cagle knocking in 3RBIs on two hits.

Wrestling

Forfeits and pins helped the Blackhawks to a 48-16 win over Shadle Park at Lewis and Clark High School June 1. Kendal Harmon (120 pounds), Joe Showalter (132) and Anthony Aguilera (182) all collected wins by pin. Matthew King notched an 8-2 decision over Zachary Pugh at 152 and Dylan Straley edged Juan Escobar with a 6-4 decision at 170.

Jackson Showalter (160), Blake Seubert (195), James Whiteley (220) and Matai James Odood (285) all won by forfeit.

Cheney moves to 1-3 in match competition this spring.
