Fossen advances to NCAA championships in pole vault

For the first time since 2014, a female athlete will be competing for Eastern Washington University at the finals of the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.

Senior Morgan Fossen capped a season of improvement by clearing 13 feet, 8 1/4 inches in the pole vault at the West Regional in College Station, Texas, which was good enough to advance her to the finals in Eugene, Ore. A 2016 graduate of North Medford (Ore.) High School, she will be among the field of 24 competing on June 10.

ShaRae Niu named EWU ‘Student of the Year’

Eastern Washington University senior volleyball player ShaRae Niu has been named the EWU Student of the Year at the 2021 Student Leadership Excellence Awards held May 26.

The Student of the Year award honors a student who has made significant contributions to their student organizations, academic program, residence hall or in their community. The Student of the Year has gone above and beyond, demonstrating initiative, dedication, dependability, compassion and impact on those around them.

Niu was among 21 other nominees for this specific award.

Former Eagle named ‘Outstanding Graduate’ in Mechanical Engineering

Nicholas Blair, a former offensive lineman for the Eastern Washington University football program, was recently selected as the Outstanding Graduate in Mechanical Engineering by the EWU Department of Mechanical Engineering and Technology.

Blair is receiving his bachelor’s degree this spring and currently has a 3.97 grade point average.

The 2016 graduate of Everett (Wash.) High School was on EWU’s roster from 2016 through 2019 before an injury ended his career.

After that, the 6-foot-7, 310-pound Blair assisted the EWU athletic department as a tutor. He was also a featured speaker for the 2020 Student Research and Creative Works Symposium.
