Blackhawk boys battle on the courts against larger teams

CHENEY – The Blackhawks boys tennis team is still looking for some success in its first season in the Greater Spokane League 3A/4A classification. First-year head coach Dan Estock attributes part of that to the size of Cheney’s team.

“We have six boys total and going up against teams that have 3-6 times that in numbers,” he said. “We have yet to win a contest, but they are continuing to battle and improve.”

The Blackhawks missed entering the win column in three matches last week, losing by 7-0 scores to Central Valley, Mead and Mt. Spokane.

Against CV, Alex Rose lost 6-1, 6-1 to Callen Johnson at No. 1 singles, Brandon Blazekovic lost 6-2, 6-2 to Tyler Baker at No. 2, Hunter Passey lost to Brandon Williams in straight games at No. 3 and Colin Chen fell 6-2, 6-2 to Finnegan Scott at No. 4. Bowman and Sam Laughton lost in straight games to Luke Noakes and Matt Haigh at No. 1 doubles, with Cheney default at No. 2 and No. 3.

At Mead, Rose fell 6-0, 6-3 to Dalyn Springer, Blazekovic in straight games to John Guske, Passey 6-1, 6-1 to Silas Farley and Cheney in straight games to Andrew Parker. Bowman and Laughton lost 6-0, 6-2 to Joe Robl and Nolan Kavon at No. 1 doubles.

At home against Mt. Spokane, Rose lost 6-0, 6-1 to Harvey Johnson, Blazekovic 60, 7-5 to Max Molgard, Laughton 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 to Noah Romey and Passey 7-5, 6-1 to Jesse Lemon. At No. 1 doubles, Bowman and Chen fell 6-2, 6-2 to Kaden Ferguson and Ryan Bro.

Cheney had to default at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles against Mead and Mt. Spokane.

Estock said his players not only continue to improve but maintain an atmosphere of competitiveness despite the results.

“This is an impressive group of boys and their scores don’t do their efforts justice,” he added.
