Eagle women fall to UW in tennis

SEATTLE – The Eastern Washington University women’s tennis squad battled the University of Washington to a 6-1 loss in Seattle on Feb. 12 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Following the match, the Eagles now sit 0-3 overall.

“I’m very proud of the team again today for the grit and desire they showed out on court,” head coach Dustin Hinson said. “Every match was a battle and we showed the kind of tennis we can play against the best competition in Division 1 tennis. Great win at No.3 doubles and No.2 singles. And we took three of the other singles matches to a deciding third set.”

Jennifer Kida notched the lone singles match win for the Eagles. The freshman from California won her second PAC-12 singles victory in a row at No. 2, dominating the Huskies Sedona Gallagher, 6-2, 6-1.

“Jennifer Kida is playing really great tennis to beat two tough PAC-12 opponents in straight sets over the past two matches,” Hinson said. “I’m very proud of that effort.”

The Eagles also found success in the No. 3 doubles pair of Louise Waite and Renata Gabuzyan, who downed UW’s Tara Chilton and Ashley Chang 6-3 for Eastern’s other match win last Friday.

Other singles results were Vanessa Wong (UW) over Scout Mathews, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1, Sarah-Maude Fortin over Zoey Nelson 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 3, Zoey Weil defeating Waite 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4, Yolanda Lin over Rylee Braeden 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 5 and Chilton over Gabuzyan, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6.

In doubles, Wong and Fortin defeated Nelson and Braeden 6-1 at No. 1 while Gallagher and Lin downed Mathews and Kida 6-3 at No. 2.

“We have more confidence and more belief in what we can do as a team and that’s a big positive,” Hinson said. “We have a long way to go yet this season but I’m really pleased with our progress thus far.”

The Eagles travel down to Oregon for two matches in two days beginning with the University of Oregon on Feb. 20 at 10 a.m. Pacific time, and then on Feb. 21 at the University of Portland at 10 a.m. PT.
