In my 20 years of military service followed by over two decades of national security work in intelligence, counterintelligence and information operations, I recognized the former Soviet Union, now the Russian Federation, as a formidable adversary. As a result of America’s confused and counterproductive posture towards NATO and the recent decision to green light Turkey’s incursion into Kurdish-held territory in Northern Syria, Russia has gained strength and influence in this strategic area and in other areas of U.S. interest.
