Cardinal volleyball searchs for a win

The Medical Lake volleyball squad made strides in the past week. No, they didn’t win a match, unless almost counts, but the young team continues to show improvement as the season progresses.

The Cardinals (3-0, 1-5) hosted the second place Freeman Scotties (2-0, 2-0) on Tuesday, Sept. 17, going 0 for 3 in three sets, 22-25, 5-25 and 18-25. Calling it a well-played game, head coach Todd Harr said the team “battled hard and fought for each point.”

Libero Grace Stimson led the team in digs and helped with serve receiving.

“We played solid at each position and took a step forward when it came to talking and staying engaged throughout the match,” Harr said in an email.

The Cards then fought hard in a match against the third place Newport Grizzlies (1-0, 2-1), going five sets 25-20, 25-19, 16-25, 21-25 and 11-15.

“This was a loss that hurt,” Harr said. “We started out the match great and just could not seal the deal.”

He said the team’s youth showed after winning the first two sets, after which the team essentially ran out of gas.

“The team still played well and competed throughout the match,” Harr said.

Rylie Spring was “steady,” leading the team with 35 assists. Amblessed Okemgbo nailed 17 kills and had seven blocks and proved to be the best hitter of the match.

“Even though this was a tough loss, the team came together and battled through adversity,” Harr said. “The team will rebound from this battle and look to get in the win column this coming week.”

At press time, Medical Lake was scheduled to face fifth-place Riverside (1-2, 2-2) on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at home, then take travel to Colville to take on fourth place Indians (1-1, 3-1) the following Thursday.
