Shaky start for Cheney volleyball team

BThe Cheney High School volleyball team started their regular season on shaky ground with a Sept. 9, 3-1 loss against Northwest Christian, but followed it up with two wins in rapid succession.

Against East Valley on Thursday, Sept. 12, the Lady Blackhawks took no prisoners, emerging victorious in three sets over the visiting Knights 25-21, 25-12, 25-12. Cheney’s Sara Graham had 16 kills with three assists, with Blackhawk Shelby Drapers delivering seven aces.

Sophomore Abbie Scott and junior Avery Stark had eight blocks between them and senior Abby Witt delivered five digs.

The Lady Blackhawks repeated the performance against Rogers on Sept. 16, winning 2-0 over the visiting Pirates in a non-league match. The three sets again showed the Lady Blackhawks’ offensive prowess and beat the Pirates in three sets, 25-16, 25-11 and 25-13.

Draper had 10 kills and Graham brought 16 assists, while Scott had five digs and Witt five blocks.

The team faced Pullman Sept. 17 and will take on Clarkston on Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.
