Cardinals down Freeman in track

Despite nasty spring weather, the Medical Lake High School boys and girls track and field teams managed some solid performances in competition last week.

Both Cardinals squads downed Freeman in their first Northeast A League meet of the season. The boys handled the Scotties 90-38 while the girls topped the hosts 71-54 in windy and cold conditions at Rockford last Wednesday.

Medical Lake fell to the other NEA school at the meet, Lakeside, the boys losing 89-51 and the girls 108.66-41.33.

“This is the first time the boys and girls both beat Freeman,” head coach Gene Blankenship said. “Obviously we are struggling against Lakeside, which is shaping up to be the best team in the league right now.”

Medical Lake set 45 new personal records at the meet. Nicholas Henry led the way for the boys, coming from behind to win the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs, finishing the former in 4:50.73 and setting a new PR of 10:52.31 in the latter.

Second-place finishes went to Pedro Sandre in the 100, Elias Edmondson in the 400, Connor Palmen in the 800 and Quintin Collins in the 3,200. Andrew Kysar set a new PR of 1:00.67 for third in the 400.

On the track, Salinas-Sanders and Mayah Eberhardt both set PRs to go 1-2 in the 100-meter dash with respective times of 13.17 and 13.44. Eberhardt also set a PR of 1:06.26 for second in the 400 and was third in the 200, while Headrick and Allison Payne each finished third in the 800 and the 3,200 respectively.

The 4x100 team of Eberhardt, Acord, Natalie Salinas-Sanders and Sophie Salinas-Sanders was second, while the 4x200 team of AJ Spivey, Joanna Gaudet, Amblessed Okemybo and Madelyn Kubes was third.

Medical Lake traveled to Spokane Falls Community College on Saturday for Cheney High School’s annual Van Kuren Invitational, with the girls placing 10th and the boys 25th out of 50 schools competing. The Cardinals had 10 boys and eight girls set new PRs and garnered first-place finishes from Farmen in the triple jump and Kelton Earl in a rain-shortened boys pole vault.
