Eastern cruises past WSU nearing tournament berth

The Eastern Washington University Eagles steamrolled in-state rivals, Washington State Cougars, 9-1 on Oct. 27 at the University Recreation Center to move closer to securing a spot in the PAC-8 Conference hockey tournament in Lake Tahoe, in February.

The Eagles were lead Friday night by junior forward, Zach Meicho’s hat trick, which included one goal in the first period and two more in the final frame.

Eastern would score seven unanswered before the Cougars got their only goal of the contest with under six minutes remaining in the game. Other EWU goal scorers included Bobby LaRue and Mitch Hunt who each netted two goals, while Will Mix and Matt Lucero each added a single tally.

The Eagles are now 10-1 this season and 6-1 in PAC-8 play. They are off this weekend but return to the URC for a pair of games Nov. 9-10 against Montana Tech.
