Cheney volleyball uses bye week to prepare for all possibilities

The Lady Blackhawks varsity volleyball team bye week couldn't have fallen at a better time as they wait to see what their future in the postseason will hold.

The team is ranked solidly in fourth in the Great Northern League with a 4-8 win-loss record, and as of press time who they'll take on in their Oct. 25 match was still up in the air, dependent on the Oct. 23 matches between West Valley and East Valley and between Clarkston and Pullman.

"We'll stay in fourth; there's no chance of shifting anywhere," said head coach Heather Zorrozua.

The Lady Blackhawks secured their standing with an Oct. 18 3-0 win against West Valley, in which standout junior Shelby Draper delivered 10 kills with 29 assists and three aces from junior Riley Potter and nine digs from sophomore Avery Stark.

The team's bye week allows them to take a breather and assess their competition following the final league game on Tuesday.

"It's great to have the bye week right now," Zorrozua said. "It's going to give us the chance to just focus on our game."

The goal for the girls this week is have fun, Zorrozua said. The Lady Blackhawks have struggled with consistency this season, and this break will allow them to focus on themselves without getting caught up in the head games of competition.

Normally, the squad would get a break from practices as well, but Zorrozua said that's not happening this year. Zorrozua swung some junior varsity players and the team will be working on bringing a high-intensity.

"We've proven we can take on these teams and beat them, but we've also proven time and time again that we can also beat ourselves," she added.

Zorrozua guesses that East Valley will wind up second in the league and host Clarkston, but said she's trying to stay away from making too many predictions.

"I'm not going to game plan for either team. As long as our girls play our game, we should be able to beat whoever our opponent is in a shorter than five set match," she said.
