Medical Lake volleyball delivers wins at Davenport Tournament

Cardinals reward head coach with first program victories

Following their showing at the Davenport Tournament, there may be something to the old “three is a charm” adage.

At least that is what third-year Medical Lake head volleyball coach Todd Harr might be thinking following his team coming away with a 2-1 record and his first match wins with the program.

“Starting the season with two wins is what this team deserves and has earned throughout their hard work and dedication to this program,” Harr wrote in an email. “ I can honestly say that this weekend was a turning point for Medical Lake volleyball.”

The Cardinals opened play with a 2-1 loss to Mary Walker High School from Springdale, Wash. falling 25-17 and 15-13 after winning a middle set 25-18.

“After our first match I felt bad for the team because while we battled, we lost in a tight three setter that could have kept us down,” Harr said.

Following dropping their opening set 25-22 against host Davenport, Medical Lake earned Harr’s first victory with set decisions of 25-22 and 17-15.

Against the Gorillas, Harr said his team played “Loose and confident, swinging away and playing as a team.”

In the final match of the day the Cardinals put it all together, topping Reardan as the offense continued to press the gas pedal and the defense shined, leading to 25-18 and 25-6 victories.

Harr singled out Courtney Daylo, the libero who took charge of the defense. “Megan Goertz, setter, had a great day as well adjusting to her hitters and staying confident throughout a long day,” he said.

“There is something different about this team, something that is pushing them to fight in every set,” Harr said. “While the competition is going to get tougher in the coming weeks, there is no team I would rather take this journey with.”
