Medical Lake drops football opener to St. Maries

Cards show glimmers of improvement in loss

Medical Lake receiver Nick Mason leaps high to grab the Cardinals' final touchdown of the night in a 42-20 opening night loss at Holliday Field to the St. Maries Lumberjacks. While they lost for a 19th consecutive time, the bright side was the team scored its most points since 2016. Next up is a road game Friday at defending Caribou Trail champ Okanogan.

If there were pluses that could be extracted out of Medical Lake's 42-20 opening week football loss to the St. Maries, Idaho Lumberjacks in a game played at Holliday Field, consider these.

The Cardinals put up the most points in any one game since their 2016 opener - a 29-24 loss to Kellogg - and they outscored a very solid Lumberjack team in the second half to do so.

Now it's a matter of improving the start where, after holding the visitors to one first down in their initial series, Medical Lake gave up a defensive touchdown on a long fumble return which opened the door to a 29-0 halftime...
