In the heat of the summer season, the main boat launch at Silver Lake was set to be closed for repaving that was to take place from July 28 -- Aug. 28.

Cheney High School senior Desire Winters was the second runner up at the recent Washington Junior Miss Pageant in Pullman.

Preseason camp opened at Eastern Washington University for new head coach Beau Baldwin with 65 returning players and some 20 newcomers. The Eagles open the season Aug. 30 at Texas Tech.

Aug. 6, 1998

After taking a month off, the Cheney Planning Commission was set to take up the controversial matter of the membership lodging overlay zone. Otherwise known as the “Greek Overlay Zone,” it would allow expansion of fraternities and sororities at Eastern Washington University.

To streamline operations at EWU, Dr. Stephen Jordan, new university president , recently set up a committee to review academic programs. The Academic Program Review Committee is tasked with delivering the report to Jordan by Sept. 1.

Aug. 4, 1988

The Cheney School District’s board of directors were set to consider a budget for the 1988-89 school year of $14.7 million.

Residents of the West Plains were being consulted for their opinions on where ashes from a planned waste-burning plant should be buried.

Cheney’s American Legion baseball team concluded its season with an 11-13 record following a sweep over Colville in which Joe Leibrecht, Jay Reed, Jason Smith and Jeff Beha had multiple hit games.

Aug. 3, 1978

Access gates at Silver, Amber, Williams and Clear lakes were closed by officials at the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife following learning the agency did not have sufficient funding to maintain minimum health standards.

EWU’s board of trustees were told to initiate measures to cut 5.8 percent — about $1.3 million — out of the school’s million budget. The university will work within the confines of $40.7 million for the 1978-81 biennium, down from $43.5 million from 1977-79.

Some 5,000 fans were in attendance at Woodward Field to see the Seattle Seahawks inter-squad scrimmage where quarterback Jim Zorn completed 10 of 18 passes for 88 yards.

Aug. 8, 1968

Requests for transfer of territory west of Interstate 90 from Clear Lake to Granite Lake from the Cheney to the Medical Lake School District will be considered at the next meeting of the Spokane County Committee for School District Organization.

Spokane Fire District No. 3 crews were busy answering 16 calls to fight fires between July 25 and Aug. 5.
