Health and wellness event June 9 in Airway Heights

Last updated 5/31/2018 at 10:04am

Airway Heights will have a third annual health and wellness event coming soon in the parking lot of Grocery Outlet on June 9, thanks to the Neighborhoods Matter program in Spokane. The activities will run from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. with opportunities for the whole family to enjoy.

“We do this every year because we heard from the community that there are not a lot of health resources in Airway Heights,” Heather Wallace, a program specialist from the Spokane Regional Health District, said. ”So this is one way to help.”

The program is partnering with Grocery Outlet, who is sponsoring the event. All of the business in the same area of the store will be participating in some sort of way that includes having a booth or running some special sales during the day.

At the event, people will be able to sign up for health coverage, access health care providers and meet with health and wellness vendors. Healthy food will be available and some fun games will be on display.

There will be a DSHS (Department of Social land Health Services) mobile van of services that people can be set up with instead of making the trip into Spokane to add or make changes to an account.

During the day, a prize will also be given away to people who participate in a game that is like Bingo. Participants will visit the variety of booths to fill up the Bingo card.

Other amenities offered throughout the day include resources from dentists, insurances, SNAP fitness, Avista, WIC, Community in Schools mentorship and how to sign up or utilize food stamps.

“There is stuff for babies, kids, adults and seniors,” Wallace said. “There is something for everyone.”

Some other activities for the kids include outdoor games, a chalk area and possibly a face painter. The parks and recreation department from Airway Heights along with the fire department will also be in attendance.

The event will be hard to miss as it will take up the parking lot of Grocery Outlet at 10831 West Highway 2 and it will be walking friendly. The area will be blocked off with cement blocks so that nobody can drive through the designated spots. All the events are free and open to the public.
