Blackhawk girls finish fourth at Strandberg

Cheney High’s girls track and field team visited Central Valley High School last Saturday for the annual Strandberg Invitational. The Blackhawks finished fourth out of 19 teams, scoring 64 points, 6.5 back of Coeur d’Alene and 23 behind runner-up Pullman.

The host Bears emerged on top with 182 points.

Alsatta Bakana and Sophia Van Wormer were the two Cheney athletes to return home with first-place finishes. Bakana captured first in the 200-meter run with a time of 25.40 seconds, while Van Wormer topped the pole vault competition with a height of 11 feet.

Zoe Lamb was second in the vault at 10-06, while Alexis Miller finished fourth in the 200 with a new personal record of 27.02. Miller was sixth in the 100.

Senior Jolene Whiteley was fourth in the 800 with a season-best time of 2:22.81. Hannah Spakousky and Marion Mager-Reeser finished seventh and eighth in the 3,200, with Spakousky turning in a season-best of 12:17.95 and Mager-Reeser a PR of 12:31.59. Kaitren Fisher placed seventh in the 300 hurdles.

All three Cheney relay teams finished in the top-10. The 4x200 team of Miller, Sara Graham, Bakana and Alexis Van Horne was second in 1:46.62, the 4x100 team of Maddie Warren, Miller, Stephanie Assonken and Alexis Van Horne was third and the 4x400 team of Sierra O’Neill, Jaela Thornberg, Megan Habegger and Whiteley finished seventh.

Bakana and Assonken notched Cheney’s only other top-10 results in the field. Bakana was seventh in the high jump with Assonken was eighth in the long jump with a season’s best leap of 15-02 1/2.

Next up for Cheney will be District 7 competition on May 11, which will be hosted by the Blackhawks at Tom Oswald Field.
